Long since believed to have been lost, Sonic and Sally have been tasked with gathering the shards of the legendary sword. The shards are scattered across Mobius (but will most likely be in areas where anyone can pop, just be sure to ask first!)
Also to note, this is not a maguffin quest, the shards still contain some of the purity and evil repelling powers. So if some one with an impure heart holds it they will instantly start to feel weakened. But that doesn't mean that villains can't try to stop Sonic, Sally and anyone else involved from reaching said shard.
