[Delete] | Untold centuries ago, the earth faced total extinction at the hands of a massive meteorite. Humanity managed to band together and pool their resources into a single point of defense. The attempt to destroy the meteor only succeeded in shattering it. Many of the pieces flew off into space, but several large chucks made landfall while thousands of smaller pieces burned up in the atmosphere.
What the inhabitants of the planet did not know is that the meteor was not a natural creation. It was an invention, created by an unknown race thousands of light-years away. It contained samples of every living substance on their own planet, as well as hundreds of other planets, and was intended to ensure that long after their dying world met its end, they would continue to exist somewhere. It was known as The Ark.
The dust from the falling structure and that which burnt in the atmosphere all over the planet was inhaled by nearly every being on the planet. The thousands of biological samplings on the meteors that struck earth reacted with the atmosphere, and the DNA of the Earthly inhabitants, and beings began to evolve. Changes that usually took centuries only took a few generations, as Grandchildren looked almost nothing similar to Grandparents.
Not everyone was so lucky as to evolve, though. 2/3 of the population of Humans and Animals all succumbed to alien diseases. Many of those who remained evolved into creatures unrecognizable as human, while others took on traits of humanoid aliens. Some were mindless monsters, some were sentient, some were highly intelligent.
Amongst them, people developed powers and abilities. Psychics, Pyromancers, Telekenetics, and dozens of other powered beings began to develop.
In the olden days, these were new and terrifying, but with time passed, it's become common place.
