I'm Gonna Sing the Doom Song Now!

Year: 2033
Location: Tampa, Florida

At the end of the Long Count Mayan calendar, there was no firey apocalypse. In fact, no such thing was ever predicted. Instead the Long Count reset to zero, which sends mankind into a period of change and transition. It is how humanity reacts to this transition that determines its ultimate fate.

After this reset, some humans began to change, as did many children conceived after that time. These people have varied abilities, but they are essentially Metahumans - individuals who have spontaneously (and largely unpredictably) evolved in some fashion. Although the issue was a mere curiosity for a while, the influx and current age of those born with a mutation, many now adults and entering society, has become a heated topic politically, religiously, and socially. The government has attempted to track these individuals to see their progress and impact, but the project is vast and very difficult to administrate. In addition, the United States Supreme Court has long held that individuals are entitled to genetic privacy; however, the death of two judges (both under suspicious circumstances), could mean that when their replacements are chosen, this decision could be overturned. In addition, there are many ways to circumvent the ruling; the smallest genetic sample left behind, be it even less than a single bead of sweat, can be tested and cataloged.

Though there are advocates for equality among the now considered two races, the majority of the population are unsure of the metahumans, and some business, schools, even churches have decided to close their doors to them, creating for the first time since before the Civil Rights movement a segregated community in spirit if not yet necessarily in law.

Homo sapiens may be undergoing a slow replacement, and the natural urge to preserve one's own species has created an undercurrent of tension and, to a certain extent, fear.

Places of Interest

Ybor City: This section of Tampa is not only the source of most nightlife, but it has also become home to many new people as a part of the city's effort to change its tarnished image. In particular, establishments include the Masquerade, the Castle (a favorite for many Meta), and Ampersand.

Sacred Ground: A low-key coffee shop/cafe which caters largely to the metahuman population.

Channelside: An area with a variety of living accommodations, restaurants, nightlife, theater, and the well-known aquarium.

Hyde Park: An older, "quaint" area of the town known for more quiet goings-on as well as the location of many small businesses and other random points of interest.

There are also a variety of universities in the area. Most of the social/"night life" areas of the city are accessible by streetcar (including Ybor City, Channelside, Hyde Park, and the University of Tampa).

More places of interest will be posted when they come up during RP.
