By scientific classification, Vampires are listed as Homonus nocturna. They carry themselves as racially superior to their mortal counterparts, and are often defined as the living dead. Since there are many myths about Vampires, I intend to set the record straight with this list of attributes associated with my kind.

I.Appearance
A. Typically have very pale skin, translucent in appearance, in comparison to humans. **Note: Some Vampires, in an attempt to better blend in, will use some form of self-tanner to darken their skin tone to a more “natural” hue.**
B. Eyes **NOTE: Some Vampires will wear contacts to hide the inhuman color of their eyes.**
1) The pupils of newborn Vampires are generally a pinkish or reddish color.
2) Vampires (also called Nocturna) can be identified by their naturally golden or reddish colored irises.
3) When a Vampire senses blood, needs to feed, or is extremely angered, their entire eye turns pitch black, with the veins around their eyelids pulsing. To many humans, this biological reaction is considered to be extremely frightening, though some have been known to shrug it off.
4) Elongated and sharpened canines on both the top and bottom rows of teeth which can retract to appear simply as naturally pointed canines.
C. Elongated or sharp fingernails, hair and fingernails still grow.
1) In the case of infected humans-turned-Vampires, their appearance will not change. If modified, their appearance will immediately change back to its original state, because Vampires are unchanging.
D. Naturally born Vampires possess features that most consider to only be possessed by the lucky and blessed, such as a youthful and more ethereal appearance. However, when a human becomes a vampire the aging process stops. They will forever remain the same age and appearance they were when they were turned. Any distinguishing marks they were given before the change remains a part of them in their Vampiric state.

II. Abilities
A. Glamour: the ability to charm weaker minded humans with their scent, beauty, and hypnotic gaze.
1) Hypnotic gaze is an ability that is learned over time. Newborn Vampires possess a mild form of this ability, but older Vampires are able to fully hypnotize a human if they can capture their gaze, and impress their will upon that human.
B. Super Strength: At birth/creation, a Vampire’s strength is slightly greater than a human’s. This strength increases as the Vampire ages.
C. Superhuman: Five senses are intensified.
D. Vampires give off a powerful pheromone, creating a strong response from the human senses like infatuation or intense desire. This effect is commonly attributed only to Veela, but it should be known that Vampires possess this quality as well.
1) Note that this effect can be resisted by Occlumency.
E. Older vampires have a much stronger control over their blood thirst. Some are able to survive on small doses of blood but this takes a highly skilled person to have enough control and most vampires considered living off small doses as a result of survival in remote climates.
F. Sleep: Vampires do need sleep but they don't need to sleep the regular eight hours like humans do.
1) They can survive with about a week of sleep every three months. It is an absolute necessity, but most vampires are very paranoid about their sleeping habits and usually do not like to make sleeping a regular habit.
2) They sleep as little as possible to avoid death during sleep. When they do sleep they are in deep REM sleep, leaving them vulnerable to attack. They are practically oblivious to everything around them.
G. Vampires have the ability to smell the difference between different humanoid species and recognize them for what they are.
H. Vampire Blood is highly addictive to humans. However, it does have a healing factor which can help mend wounds and bones.
I. Expert trackers and hunters.
J. Some humans have special abilities which they continue to have when they are turned from mortal to vampire. This would be something that they were very good at in “life.” Additional, special abilities are not gained after or by the change, only intensified.
1) Example: A witch had a strong intuition and connection with her “inner eye.” She would more than likely carry this ability into her Vampiric state, but with magnification it would become foresight in a more powerful sense. She would be able to remember her prophecies, for example.
K. A Vampire bite is toxic to some humans, which can result in a reaction very similar to an allergic reaction, or make the victim very weak, ill or even lead to death.
1) This problem only affects a small portion of the human population.
2) For most humans, a Vampire bite is pleasurable. The bite releases a toxin into the blood stream that calms the victim and masks the pain, as well as making the blood pump faster through said victim’s veins. However, regardless of how much or little blood is taken, this toxin leaves the victim feeling drained and weak.
a. Vampire saliva closes the wound, ensuring that the victim does not bleed to death.
III. Magic
A. Vampires have a natural resistance to magic. This does not mean that they are immune, only that it takes more to do more.
B. The Unforgivable Curses do not have as strong an effect on Vampires as they do on mortals, but they still can do some serious damage.
1) Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra): Results in great amount of damage, inflicting wounds that can cause them to bleed out from the hit site. It stuns them and induces bleeding from all orifices, also resulting in intensified pain. The healing rate is greatly slowed.
2) Crucio: Still results in intense pain, but a Vampire may be able to resist due to a heightened pain threshold. (Basically means that Vampires can tolerate a lot more pain than a human can, so this spell is less effective.)
3) Imperio: The stronger willpower of an older Vampire makes this spell less effective, but a younger or weakened Vampire can still be made to follow the caster’s will if the caster’s willpower is stronger than the Vampire’s.

C. Because Vampires are already very strong creatures with a natural resistance to the effects of magic, they also have a harder time casting magic. Some will be able to produce weaker versions of spells, but for the most part there is a serious deficiency in that area.
**NOTE: If a Vampire is casting magic, they must roll a 1d20 and roll above 13 to be successful at all.**

IV. Weaknesses
A. SUNLIGHT - For all their strengths, vampires have their vulnerabilities, and none more so than when they come into contact with the sun. Exposure and the resulting effects depend on the level of contact, and yet it also depends on the age of the vampire. For example, elders can go outside if they need to, but with risks attached. On a cloudy day, they may experience skin irritation, and be physically weakened. If they choose to walk around in such conditions, they will typically do so with the aid of enchantments. Something as simple as the sunscreen products that Muggles use can be used as protection, with varying levels of success. Even through this, however, exposure of this kind may cause susceptibility to skin diseases, or in rare cases, may be temporarily blinded.

Full contact with sunlight will cause their flesh to burn no matter the age of the vampire, and death follows quickly.
B. STAKES: Driving a stake through a vampire's heart will cause paralysis, leaving the victim completely vulnerable. This is one of the preferred methods for killing a vampire.
C. SILVER - Silver, when in contact with a vampire's skin, will cause a reaction much like acid.
D. FIRE - Fire is just as deadly to vampires as it is to humans, yet the pain it causes is much more intense.
E. DEAD BLOOD - Vampires cannot digest blood from a dead creature, whether animal or human, and will make them seriously ill. It works along the same lines as a person eating raw meat.
F. BLOOD THIRST - What vampires called the Blood Thirst is an overpowering, intense physical sensation that can occur when a vampire is in the vicinity of exposed blood, when they lose control of their anger, or when in the throes of sexual passion. It is an inherent part of their Vampiric natures that is extremely difficult to control, though not an impossible feat with age and expierience, and is thus very dangerous.
G. ENTERING A DOMICILE - A vampire cannot enter the home of a witch, wizard or any other magical creature without their willing invitation. This is due to magical protection that is cast on homes as a matter of simple security. They can come and go as they please until this invitation is revoked by whoever offered the invitation in the first place, at which point the wards will become active, and the vampire is then forcibly ejected from the house.

Because very few Muggle homes would have this protection, any vampire can freely enter unprotected homes without consequence.

V. Myths
A. Do Vampires have reflections?
1) Yes and no. They do show a reflection in mirrors but they are seen as more of a feral creature.
B. Do Holy objects work against Vampires?
1) No. A vampire can stand any holy object. Vampirism is a virus which has nothing to do with religions.
C. How about garlic?
1) Nope! Purely a nuisance. Garlic smells bad. That’s all there is to that.
D. Can they cross running water?
1) Yes. They can move through water just like anyone else.
E. Do Vampires need soil from their homeland to move freely?
1) No. They can travel freely.
F. Do they need to sleep in coffins?
1) Yes and no. Vampires do not have to sleep in coffins, as long as their resting place is protected from those who would want to kill or harm them and the sun.
G. Is a Vampire the walking dead?
1) Yes. The vampire is the body of a human that has been animated after death.
H. Can a vampire eat normal food?
1) No. A vampire can only handle blood, which is why they need it so badly.

VI. Changing a human into a Vampire
A. Naturally born Vampires: Considered to be the pure ones. They consider themselves to be untainted by human DNA, which had to come into contact with the virus to become Vampire.
B. A Vampire must drain the human to the point of death, but not so much that they actually die. Then the vampire lets the human drink a large amount of their Vampiric blood.
C. During the change, the human body effectively dies. This causes intense pain in the newly made vampire. The entire process takes three days. When the newborn wakes up, they must be fed, either from a human or from their master.
D. The maker allows the newborn Vampire to drink from them, creating a bond with the young Vampire. It's not a two way thing; it's a way to keep the drinker under control through the blood. This bond is absolutely mandatory. The fate of any and all rogues is left to the council.
E. Before making a child or mate Vampire, a Vampire must have the approval of the Council. Once the new Vampire is created, it must be registered with the Ministry in order to show that they aren't just some wild animal that thirsts for blood.
F. Not everyone is physically capable of becoming a vampire, because the change is so drastic that many die in the process. Some are able to undergo the transformation by sheer force of will.
G. Vampirism is a disease. Much like any other viral disease, there is no cure. The virus changes and mutates in order to survive.
H. Is a Vampire’s skin always cold feeling?
1) No, not always. This is mainly due to the health of the heart, and the rate of blood flow that heart can maintain. A healthy, strong heart, like you would find in a younger person, can maintain a strong steady flow of blood, which keeps the Vampire’s skin feeling warmer. However, if the heart was damaged, say from disease or old age, it would not work as effectively, causing the Vampire to feel colder. Additionally, Vampires tend to feel warmer immediately after they feed.
a)This goes for both natural born Vampires and humans that were later changed into Vampires, although the natural born Vampires tend to suffer from heart weakening with age, as opposed to damage to the heart at creation.

The History
When exactly Vampires came into existence is difficult to determine, especially with the existence of the two separate branches of Vampires. If certain sources are to be believed, Vampires have existed for as long as humans. Others claim the race arose sometime later. Like most things, the truth most lies somewhere between the two.

What is known for certain is that the pureblood Vampires, that is, the Vampires that were born with the condition, were the first to come into existence. However, the births of this type were extremely rare, and Vampire couples often had to try for hundreds for years in order to produce offspring, making it extremely difficult to grow the population. The ruling Vampires during this time were those that were able to gain and keep control of what they wanted through diplomacy, or more often, through force. This led to ongoing fighting between the different Vampire lines, only compounding the decline in Vampire population. Careful research has uncovered that it was this war that lead to the creation of the second type of vampire: those that were originally human. Fortunately for historians, the first human to undergo the change was a monk and a scholar, and was therefore able to document what occurred.

This monk was traveling between monasteries, and was running extremely behind schedule. In an effort to conserve time, he continues his journey after dark, despite the dangers that arise when the sun sets. He tells about how he then that he comes across a small child lying on the side of the road, deathly pale, wide eyed, and covered in what appeared to be blood. He immediately stopped to determine the state of the small boy. Before he really knew what was happening, the boy was tearing at his throat and lapping at the blood. After that, all he knows for what seems like an eternity is excruciating pain. Then, he describes, it suddenly stops. He opens his eyes to see the boy, still blood stained, but now looking terrified. The monk then describes the first words he hears from the child, and how he would never forget them.

“I didn’t mean it, sir! I was just so thirsty. I couldn’t help myself. But I put it back! I gave you back your blood, and now you’re alright. You… you are alright, aren’t you?”

It is unknown what exactly has happened to the First Maker and the First Made, but from then on it was known that birth was not the only way to increase the Vampire population, and increase it did. Around that time there was a noticeable boom in the number of Vampires encountered, both by wizards and by Muggles. It is also noted that from then on there is a drastic change in the ruling of Vampire society.

The Vampire Council
The Council was formed, most likely in response to the Wizards’ Council (the forerunner of the Ministry of Magic) that formed around the same time. It is the supreme authority in the Vampire community, and still exists to this day. Originally, the council consisted of a few of the oldest Vampires, although how many made up the Council changed several times. As the population grew and spread, so did the size of the Council, until it reached its current size: seven natural born and six human-changed Vampires.

As the centuries went on, it became more and more apparent that the council would not be enough to successfully rule over Vampire society. As countries more and more countries are being formed, another rank is added to better rule. Even this is not enough, and the process continues until we have the system that is in effect today.

At the highest level we have the council, which is the final authority on all matters brought before it, and rules over vampires all over the world, although it is centered in Glasgow, Scotland. Under that, there are the presidents, who rule over the individual countries. Under them, where applicable, are the governors, who control the states within the country. Then, finally, there are the masters, whose domain extends only as far as the city limits.

Dealings with the Ministry

Unsurprisingly, the Vampires have often clashed with humans, and more specifically, with the Ministry of Magic. The Ministry has recently passed laws requiring new vampires to be presented to the Ministry to prove that they are fit to continue existing. Clearly, the Council does not support any form of control from a human government, but their official position is that the community should abide by the laws of the Ministry, or face the consequences the Ministry deems appropriate. However, the Council makes no effort to enforce said consequences, nor do they offer help to those that break wizarding law.

Additionally, while the Council has made their decision, those beneath them, specifically the city Masters, will often have their own views that occasionally differ from what the Council has decreed. It is best to consult your city’s Master before changing a human, just to be safe.
