It has long been the position of this community's administration that flutter ponies would fit well enough into our role playing setting to be playable, as long as we don't become overcrowded with them. A player has come up with an idea for such, but wants more clarification on how they fit into the setting.

Flutter ponies have officially appeared in both G1 and G3 media, and were portrayed very differently in each. In G1, they were roughly the same size as the other ponies and only significantly distinguished visually by having an alternate wing style compared to pegasus ponies. In G3, they are significantly smaller and have more colorful wings than their G1 counterparts as well as deely-boppers on their heads, following a more pixie sort of design aesthetic.

In addition, we need to determine what sort of role they play for our purposes, as all types of pony seem to have a niche to fill. Do they have a direct impact on nature, taking care of some aspect thereof, as earth ponies with the land, pegasi with the sky, or sea ponies with the sea? Do they have some kind of unique magic similar to, but distinct from unicorns? What do they do or have that makes them special like the other ponies yet distinct from the other ponies? I'm not well-versed in pony mythos from before G4, so I'm not going to be able to provide good examples for a starting point here.

The first question is kind of a simple either/or, in my mind, so I've set up a poll for it. It still warrants some discussion, if anyone has any arguments on why they prefer one or the other. The second question really is more open ended and really relies on community discussion, so have at it here.

As reminder on something already determined, if they exist, flutter ponies have been established in chat canon through play to be at least so elusive as to be considered the stuff of foal's tales.

I like regular pony sized but i think thats because I am partial to G1 things until G4 re-invents them to be better.

I like the idea that they are small, and play a vital role in the ecosystem on a scale too small for earth ponies to handle, with or without small magics. Supervising insects in pollination, measuring dew placement, things like that. This would mean the pony most likely to cross paths with them would be Junie, for one reason or another. On the whole, though, I approve of Flutterponies.

From what I saw in the movie, they seem to have the power to drive back evil. Maybe their power could be divine in origin? Or Something similiar?

ive also had a thought that flutter ponies, if tiny, are bringers of dreams to younger ponies. like the dream faeries from the sailor moon movie.. >_>

Flutter ponies just give me the feeling of small fairy like things, plus it makes them diffrent from pegasi, if they are full sized then they arnt really anything but a diffrent pegasus

I'm in the tiny camp, myself... just because I want a pony version of Tinkerbell. ^^

Really, though, the "little touches of nature" bit does make a lot of sense, really. They still have some specific thing to drive back, say, The Smooze, but by and large are not deus ex machina all the time, just another form of pony out to live their lives and make the world work.
