It is the beginning of the Fourth Age in Middle-Earth. Sauron has been overthrown and the foundations of Barad-dûr have been destroyed. What is left of the Enemy's forces have fled in retreat to what refuge they can find, but are steadily hunted. The Ring-bearers have passed over the sea at Mithlond to the land of Valinor, and Aragorn Elessar has been crowned King of the Reunited Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.

Men have been banned from entering the Shire. Many elves have passed away into the West, but not all have done so, finding Middle-Earth to be more peaceful as it once was now that the Shadow has fled. Durin VII has led the dwarves of Durin's Folk back to Khazad-dûm and has reclaimed the once thought to be lost city, and has been restored to it's former glory.

Mordor is once again under the control of the South Kingdom, and though it now being a mostly empty and desolate land, evil has had a tendency in the past to rear its ugly head from the former Black Land, and so Gondor keeps a constant watch on it.

A time of peace has issued over Middle-Earth, for the most part. The Reunited Kingdom remains at war against the Haradrim and the evil men out of the East, and the Corsairs of Umbar, and all of the former allies of Sauron that have not recognized the glory of the risen kingdom of Númenor. Not all evil has passed, though one Dark Lord has suffered his final defeat, the original Dark Lord from the beginning of the world has still yet to return.

Valinor and Middle-Earth are at a steady peace, but the Doors of Night are shaking, the Final Battle approaches, and names long dead and forgotten are set to rise again against the oncoming Shadow...
