A long time ago, moving back about, 100 years. We meet Akki Hikyuu (or Oni as he is called by friends and family), a demon on the surface land, and leader of the Leopard Demon Tribe. At the time he was about 700 years old, which in comparison to the way a human ages would only be about 19 for a demon. The young demon leader was getting tired of the same old routine, of which he followed everyday; hunt the lands for food, guide his people in the Demon-Arts, and return home to his family, with no wife to share his time with. Unfortunately that was the life a leopard demon king had to lead in those times. Needless to say life became a little monotonous for the young Leopard Demon. He longed for the day when he would go on a journey and see what the rest of the world was like, to see what other tribes rituals were, and tastes foods of another land. This was something he dreamt every night, until one night, while practicing normal meditation rituals, he met another young demon who promised him there was a world out there that he could help him reach. Upon making a pact with the demon, later figuring out it was with Pain(the devil) he is able to leave the village. At what cost he is unsure, but he was happy to explore the outside world on his own. Having no one to bother with, or answer to.
One day near the great tree which used to supply the world with magic energy, he met another young feline adventurer. She was smart, a little goofy, and clumsy. She went by the name Nikko, Of the Neko(cat) Demon tribe. Shortly after meeting with Nikko, they met up with a samurai traveler who was apparently looking for a fight. The Samurai did not like demons apparently and started attacking the two of them. After quickly defeating the Samurai the two decided to see the world together, and thus a new adventure was born.
Upon their adventures the two found themselves outside a very small village which was notorious for hating demons of any type. There was a young boy being chased out, a mob running after him yelling "DEMON DEMON!" and trying to kill the boy. Nikko and Oni intervened and stopped the young man from being killed. The child's name was Ryden, apparently he had the ability to control shadows. But it was unclear whether he was a demon or not. The two added him to the group and planned their next adventure to sneak into a human village in disguise. Upon sneaking in the human village they learned about some type of crystal that lie in different regions of the world. They learned in a human village that these crystals contained powerful magics, and once a user had all of them together those crystals would come together giving the user all the power in the world. Oni and Nikko wasn't too particularly interested in finding these crystals. But upon leaving the human village ran into someone who had one. There apparently were four different types of crystals; LIFE which has the ability to heal or even bring someone back from the dead, DEATH which has the ability to reanimate the dead while keeping them under your control, or kill someone in an instant, ELEMENT which had the ability to increase the users strength by 10 fold, and the ability to control water, electricity, fire, and wind, and finally EARTH which gives the user the ability to control plant life, and increase vegetation. The person they ran into had the crystal of death, no one was injured or got hurt. But they saw first hand what the power of the crystals could do. At the time they decided to not get involved with the humans affairs.
One night while resting int he woods from a long day, Oni had the sudden urge to go back to his village. Getting the feeling that something was wrong. He and Nikko ran through the woods, jumping through the trees and wild life at top speed trying to get back to Oni's village. Upon getting there they realized that it was too late to do anything. The entire village was burned down, everything was in ruin and rubble, nothing and no one left standing. Oni realizing this was all his fault feel to his knees broken from the experience, seeing the bodies of his dead relatives and friends was way too much for him to bare. Nikko promised that she would never leave his side and that he would always have her as family, unknowing that he made a pact with the devil and that was what he was blaming himself for. Oni couldn't mustar the guts to tell her what he had done.
50 years had passed, and Nikko and Oni's relationship was becoming more and more intimate. They were now officially together as a couple and had been since the incident in with Oni's village. Explorations of the world had been done and Oni and Nikko were content with just spending time together. Oni had brought up never seeing what Nikko's village looked like and Nikko got flustered at the thought. Going to her village again ment seeing her family, and she mfor one wasn't too particularly thrilled to go see her mother again.
Nikko's mom was a little on the eccentric side, but after a short while of convincing Nikko reluctantly went back the village she was born. Nikko's mother embraced Nikko, Oni, and Ryden with open arms. After a short while of staying with Nikko's family, Oni and Nikko decided to leave Ryden with Nikko's mother for a while, so he would get a better sense of family. Remain somewhere where he would be accepted. Nikko and Oni set out without him for the time being back out on thier adventure... not that they were going to let Nikko's mother know that. She scared Nikko off due to embarrassment... talking of marriage to Oni. Oni merely found her mother to be amusing and brushed it off. Continuing on their adventure through the world visiting many villages on the way. The couple figured out, through information provided from these villages, that the tree of mana, the tree they met near; was dying and mana, what makes that magic and supplies the planet with life was dying. They figured that they would go to the tree and try to do what they can to save the dying tree, since this would be something that would affect them as well as the rest of the world. Unfortunately upon getting to the tree they realized there was nothing they could do to save it. Pain(the devil) was the one behind creating the tree in the first place, which, in turn, created the crystals. As the tree died the power from the crystals began to fade with it. It is unsure how the tree started to die, or why it, at the time just all of the sudden disappeared. But once it was gone, the world slowly fell into ruin.
Dragons of the lands. came together to figure out a solution to the problem of dwelling mana. Oni and Nikko, who had searched for the dragons power and knowledge in the first place, suggested to create more crystals in place of the one's that were fading; having these crystals restore the balance of the world. They agreed to do this, eventually creating three crystals that would be guarded byt he dragons themselves, keeping the power out of the hands of greedy humans who wished to use their powers for they're own bidding. The dragons spanning across to three different regions of the world, Each group of dragons taking their own crystal. The crystals powers were specific tot he kind of power the group of dragons creating them possessed. LIFE which had the power to restore life of any type, return health to stable conditions, cure sickness, and remove any posion. DEATH Which had the power to manipulate dead creatures, and kill others, and STRENGTH which has the power to multiple strength or weaken depending on what the user wills.
Villages heard of the dragons plan to restore the crystals, but their noble deed was taken in a different light. They saw this as the dragons conspiring with the demons, and only as this. Forgetting the fact that they just saved the world from being destroyed. The dragons, which were pretty much seen as god-like to the humans, image would change from this point on. The dragons were hunted. Villages banned together to form kingdoms. These kingdoms looked to hunt the dragons and take their crystal's using the power for military dominance, so they could expand their land. Taking over other villages and eventually other kingdoms.
One of the kingdoms called, Kasai. Was lead by king, Kira Doragon, when they finally found one of the dragons harboring the crystal of power. Taking every guardian dragon captive and using them as weapons, they took the crystal to establish military prowess, taking over every nearby village quickly to establish power. A neighboring kingdom KAZE, wanted to establish their power so they would not be taken over by Kasai. leader, and king, Jihi Ritoru, followed Doragon's example, stretching his soldier's nearly across the world, he found the dragon harboring the crystal of Death. He took the dragons guarding the crystal captive and took the crystal also. Using the dragons as powerful weapons, they took over many small villages becoming a super power. Of course there are still villages left not belonging to either of the kingdoms, but these kingdoms are notorious for their military strength and power due to the crystals.
Word eventually spread to the remaining dragon group, holding the crystal of life. He rallied Oni and Nikko to come before him, telling them of the situation, he left the crystal in their care. Shortly after this they went into hiding.
After going into hiding the for over one hundred years, the war between the two nations had waged on for the longest of times. The crystals that each nation held becoming the staple of thier power. Each nation sent a battalian to find the last crystal, for the nation that controlled two crystals would be the one whihc would win the war. Politics in the human villages had gone sour with the thirst for power and wealth, all efforts went toward finding the last crystal and ending the war, taking over more land would become impossible with the other nation in the way to stop them.
By this point the humans were using the crystals power to take over nearby demon villages. The demons were getting tired of the human wars running over into their territories, and gave the humans information to the whereabouts of the last crystal. The Hebi(snake demon) tribe gave the invading Kasai village the whereabouts of the two demons who were intrusted with the crystal of LIFE in exchange the human would not take over their village and claim it as thier own. The Hebi tribe was of course betrayed and thier land was taken in the name of Kasai. After knowing the whereabouts of the crystal the Kasai village sent batallian after batallian in search of the remaining crystal which was held by Oni and Nikko.
Meanwhile a demon of the Kaze village Azalie had escaped from her prison inside the walls of he village and made it out to the forest just on the outside. This forect was a deep forest between Kasai village, which at the time, viewed everyone as equal, human and demon alike, and the Kaze village who viewd demons as inferior, demon-arts were not allowed and demons were used as slaves. It was in this forest Azalie met Ekkar, a young demon boy who wondered into the girl by accident. Although thier two villages were at war, te two childern made a pact that they would explore the world together and find a way to end the war. It wasn't too long after the pact was made that the slave owners who owned Azalie had come into the forest looking for her when wings exploded from her back in a most unknown transformation, both to Azalie and Ekkar. In fear of the demon girl the two slave owners ran back toward the village, and Ekkar would tend to her for the rest of the night.
By this time the couple had been married for 50 years and had not been back to the Neko tribe and told Kamishiro Nikko's mother the news. This was bearing hard on Nikko mind and she wanted to return to the village to tell her, but Oni wouldn't go to the village in fears of putting it in danger since the batallians had been after them.
