Castlevania has some typical branches of magic, with the usual Holy, Dark, and other such elemtants. Here are some examples...

Fire- Spells from fire range from throwing fire balls, making fire walls, or perhaps summoning a creature that can use fire in offensive manners.

Ice- Your typical ice shards, the occasional freezing someone in a block of magical ice, snow storms, and such

Natureish- Your run of thorning out weapons, making vines attack, or being able to deal well with herbs. Herbs, like, you can tell that root when chewed on delays the effects of a certain poison, another plant can help make you healthier, and the sap from something else when spread over your skin stops infections and is good on burn. You can also emply one of my favorite spells, which is still unused btw, where vines rip up from the ground, that are covered in thorns, and just cut stuff up. Bwaha. It also makes mandragorans.. those suckers are nasty.

Earth- Earthquakes, fissures opening, and such.

Venom- Poison effects, maybe in cloud form, maybe in liquid splattering form. Also could cover acidic type things.

Wind- Small tornados, sweeping winds, so on.

Lightning- C'mon, we all know this one. Zappies!

Holy- This one is a bit more broad. It ranges from healing, to wards, to holy smitings. It is very effective against undead. It is effective with making things better. It is light, it is nice. It is an aid. Though even it can sometimes harm, as we've seen with Holy bolts, though a majority of Holy spells are helpful, rather then offensive. Cleric things fall under this feild.

Dark- Likewise, this one is a bit complicated. It's very effective against holy. Spells range from dark wards that harm, creepy dark blasts, black holes, and some kinds of attacks the drain the user to do attacks. Also, necromancer abilities fall under this field.

So, those are the basics, and some minor examples. There is much more major things that can be done with each, and many less extravagant things.

I myself have some unique views on magic. I agree with everything S said, so I figure, why not go into a little more detail, giving everyone some more ideas, and things to concider when making your characters.

The big thing about magic is its source, how do you get it, what powers it. Is it an enchanted weapon, are you drawing from the powers of Heaven, or is it the power of Nature? Many times, the most effective magic comes from the user, drawing on the mana that courses through there body. Keep in mind, no matter what the magic, it will drain your character some how, so you need to be wise when you use it...

One of the fun things about magic is the ability to mix different kinds together. Doing this allows for some really explosive results, some time literally. So, I figure, why not give you guys an outline of sorts, mostly my take on things. As T has said, use your imaginations, make some stuff up. These are my ideas, how my thought process works when I make characters. I encourage each of you to push yourselves and come up with some new ideas that none of have seen!

So.... here we go, my 2 cents:

Fire- It burns, it scars, it heats things up. Combined with Wind, it creates explosions, forceful blasts at amazing speeds. With ice or water in this case, it can scald there target, or make steam masking its target in a thick hot cloud of moisture locked air. Toss in lightning with it...well, thats just gonna hurt a lot! And since lighting travels so fast, this makes it even faster, a true force to be reckoned with. in The hands of a demon, Hellfire is its name... its potent, deadly, and inhumanly cruel to everything it touches.(although caps kinda got this one in a bind right now.)On the Holy side, it becomes a cleansing, purifying force of God.

Ice/water- cold... thats what it is. Yes, sending out shards of ice at characters is fun, but lets push it more. Mix with wind, a cold arctic blast, maybe slowing your opponent. Against nature and plants, its devistating, forcing them to go into a hibernating like state... maybe. As water with wind, powerful torrents, deluges rain down on your foe, even hail. Combined with earth, you might create a wall of rocks and Ice to protect you. On the darkside- it brings loneliness, fear... it isn't fun to be cold. With Holy magic, it could sooth, bringing a gentle numbness to ease a pain

Wind- Tornadoes, hurricanes, gentle breezes. The wind is a vast resource and surrounds us no matter where we go. In the hands of the devine, it is a purifying force of both body and soul. At its worst, it picks up and throws debris, pummeling its target viciously. Because of its nature, the darkerside of magic doesn't use it.

Lighting- Like S said, Zappies! Its a hard unyielding master that just makes you twitch like crazy. It's painful... not much else to say there.

Venom- Poisons, a slow deadly killer, in my opinion one of the worst things that can happen to a character. Mixing herbs, toxins, what have you, you can make a character wither in pain for hours, or only minutes. This can be a very broad category when it comes to what can be done, just look at nature and the natural poisons that animals have: Paralysis, nerve damage, horrible scaring to the body, even death. Some poisons, when mised properly, can generate clouds of deadly gas that can very in potency. It is the corruption of nature at its best.

Earth- Earthquakes, fissures. The very fury of the world comes to bare. Combined with fire, you get lava, a slow, deadly killer that melts whatever it touches. With water, sweeping mudslides that knock down everything... makes for one heck of a cleaning bill too. And one can never forget its every present shaking and rumbling.

Nature- The source of life and healing. Using herbs, one can mix salves and potions to help heal others, aiding them in fighting of sickness. On the more physical side, as S said, living vines to scratch and bind your foe, mandrakes... Nature is a living force, the potential for life forms is vast. However, nature has its weakness: Fire, lightning, even wind can beat it up.

Holy- (will be done soon...)

Dark- (will be done soon...)

Hope this helps you guys!

I am working up an official magic thing, taking in what S has started, so don't go altering things to suit yourself. -_-'

Not so much altering as giving brain food. Making people think more on it.
