Seeing as how there has been alot of talk about wanting magic sorted out, I'm going to try and lay out the basics here, we can alter the system to work more smoothly later if needed.

Magical items are created by various means. The main magical items are made by normal weaponsmiths, and can later be magically enchanted by Alchemists or other magic users.

However, these items are on the bottom of the enchanted weapons list. The enchantments add only small things to the items that are enchanted. Examples range from extra durability to a flame blade.

Next step up in the area of magical items are ones that are created with magic. These items are powerful, they can go far beyond the regular enchanted items, they can even enhance the wielder's abilities as well. Examples range from items that can prevent a werewolf changing in a full moon to enhancing a person's speed and strength.

Magical items of varying strength can also be used in conjunction with one another to form the material components of powerful spells.
These can be anything from spells to bring someone back to life to causing a solar eclipse.

Magic used by an individual who doesn't use a spell book or some other such magical device as a channel for the magical energies draws upon their own life force to use. This magic has a major disadvantage in use, as in drawing on the caster's life force, it drains their strength, leaving them weakened, so they will have to rest after so much use of magic. This kinda of magic also is limited in use, many times only being able to be focused in a type of projectile. However, those who master using life energies for magic spells can summon forth powerful spells, this usually falls within the domain of Vampires and other long lived creatures, who use the life force of others for their purposes.

Magic used from spell books and other magical devices can have a much broader range of abilities. From projectiles to target enhancement and even alterations of a target. These spells also draw on a caster's life energies, but with the aid of a magic channeling item, the energies are maximized for greater use and allow the caster to be able to do more with their energies before they have to regain their strength.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them here.

What of the use of Runes and other symbols? Historically, many cultures believe that words, runes, shapes, all have there own energies and powers, much like the spell book or enchanted item. These can be used for any number of tasks, be it to cast a spell, summon a creature, or seal a doorway. These are things that I had my character use thus far.

Your thoughts?

Mystic Runes fall under the area of lower level magical items. Only Runes drawn with magic can do anything. If you take a stick and draw them in the dirt, you get nadda. Runes can either be drawn when the drawer channels magic into the runes, or by using Wizard's Sand, which is special sand that has magic in it already.

Runes can do small spells, similar to lower grade magic items. But when you combines mystic runes and symbols of different types together, you can create powerful spells. Such spells, however, require alot of planning and study to set up due to the nature of the runes, to see how they interact with each other, to balance the spells out and all so you don't get some adverse reaction you didn't want.

Rune spells by themselves can only do so much at once. Such as say, increase the flow of time for a moment, but if you combine such time spells with a teleportation or summoning spell, you could pull something through the seas of time itself, but such things are very hard to pull off.

Most Rune spells are enhancements of some type. But they can be used for creating wards against something, say you enhance the wall of a city to be able to be unbreakable to an army from a certain land, then the walls will not fall under their weapons, but this would mean others could still get through.

So, as you can see, Runes have ups and downs that need to be weighted before creating Rune Spells.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.
