Bettenchi uses a 5 magic levels system. (5th level requirements are still being discussed but we can say that level will be extremely difficult to achieve)
For levels 1-4 it is set up as follows:

Level 1 Power = Mastering at least 1 to 3 spells of the level 1 spells.

Level 2 Power = Mastering at least 3 1st level spells first, then 1 to 3 2nd level spells.

Level 3 Power = Mastering at least 3 1st level first, then 3 2nd level and then 1 to 3 3rd level spells.

Level 4 Power = Mastering at least 3 1st level, 3 2nd level, 3 3rd level, & 1 or more 4th level spells.

Things to keep in mind:
1. You can only work on mastering one spell at a time.

2. If a character was regged with a higher level spell prior to the magic system being put in place, it doesn't mean they've attained that level or can learn any more of the higher levels until they go back and learn the previous levels starting with level 1 and working their way up.

3. Species specific magic abilities do not count in the leveling system and have set levels of their own. Often the species ability strength, as far as another being able to dispell their efforts, is determined by the character's overall mage level. Such is the case with demons, but other species like Unicorns have a set level for their species abilities as far as being able to dispell their abilities. See species writeups to see which species work which way.

4. For the spell to count as a level spell, it needs to be mastered fully according to the allotted time of mastery for that spell. (It's a good idea to jot down somewhere when in the logs you started learning a spell and the dates in the logs you trained with it after that in case it is contested. Up to you, but if someone doubts you, it's your responsibility to find it in the logs and prove your case that you did in fact learn it. Admins & mods can't be expected to look that stuff up for every character and continguency. I don't think such idiotic nit pickyness will come up much, but if it does, it's a good idea.)

5. Cantrips spells are posted and available and don't count at all in leveling because most are easy to master and practically a grab bag free for all. So, they don't count for leveling.

How spell interactions and levels work:

FOR COUNTERING MAGIC ATTACKS

Dispelling is usually the first thing any wannabe mage learns and is one of the few spells that increases in strength with mage level. It is automatic and doesn't count as one of the leveling spells.

A character's ability to dispell magic used against them is determined by the magic level of the caster doing the dispelling verses the level of the spell they're trying to dispell. If a character at level 1 uses Dispell against a level 1 spell, then there is a good chance that the character will succeed. However, if a level 1 character attempts to dispell a higher level spell (i.e. a level 2 spell) their chances are reduced, if not fail all together.

EFFECTS OF MAGIC

If you've mastered a spell, you know it. The effects of a 1st level spell would be the same for a 4th level that chose to cast it as it would be for a 1st level that chose to cast it with the exception of the few spells that level up and they're explained in those spell descriptions. The difference only comes in your opponent's ability to counter your spell if they're pitting a higher level spell against your lower level spell or vice versa.

There are no levels within the levels. It has no bearing on the levels if one level 3 knows 7 spells and another knows 9. The power of their spells will be at the same level for the spells they cast, regardless. And they'll both have a level 3 ability of dispelling, regardless. So, you'll just have to work around that, if you're, for instance, pitting all 3rd level spells at each other, if you're both level 3. The advantage that the user that knows 9 has over the user that knows 7 is that the user that knows 9 has 2 more spells to choose from. That's it. They could be casting and dispelling each other's spells all day. In those cases, they just need to get clever with their timing and distractions and show some creativity to overcome the other.

If a spell is successfully dispelled, then there are no effects to the character. Many spells considered instantaneous. However, due to the free form style of roleplay in Bettenchi it is possible to have enough time to be prepared to dispell before they were quickly able to cast it. Example is so and so in his posts casts a spell that only requires a flick of his wrist and voila! Well, the person he/she is casting that at in their next post still has the right to say they detected that wrist motion, blink, or whatever and dispell it, but they need a good explanation as to why they detected in in those kinds of cases. Just because you cast a fast spell and you posted first doesn't mean they don't have the right to detect and dispell in their following post if they have the means.

Countering a spell with another spell is another way of dispelling. However, if it is not totally successful, there is a chance that it may reduce the effect/damage caused by the spell. This is still all determined by the levels of the spells used.

MAGIC ITEMS

Magic items will be proclaimed by we admins upon their discovery through RP or upon registration what magic level of effect they have. Those that have magical items prior to this system being put in, please get with an admin to discuss the magic level of your magic item. We'd rather avoid deciding this after you've already gotten in a fight, because that just looks iffy (especially if a disagreement has resulted from the fight), so if you could get with us before that, that would be preferable. The magic items' power levels will work like mage power levels, only they remain fixed at that power level and only for whatever magic properties they possess.

I hope this clears up any possible future disagreements with magic use that we could forsee happening without some kind of system. We feel this is a good system and reasonable and simple. You can feel free to disagree, but please don't get belligerant about it.

Fond Regards,
Mab
