Known in the Mortal Realm as Magicians, sometimes called Witches, Mages, or more unsavory terms, these beings are born of magic and for magic. It’s part of what gives them life. Most Magicians shed a little bit of magic in the same manner of dust and hair for others, though they’re also constantly taking in more. This magical cast off is what makes communities more powerful than a single Magician on their own, others able to absorb that magic that’s left behind. The downside is, for those that can see the weave or it’s traces, they are able to use this to track magic and its users.

All magic flows through The Weave, an intricate tangle like veins that flows through all worlds, strongest in Aetheria where it originates, weaker in the Mortal Realm and beyond. Magicians are able to call upon The Weave to cast their spells, manipulating the flow to their will. There are debates on if The Weave has sentience or not, it often can seem like a living thing with how it moves and reacts to the beings around it.

The Mortal Realm has slowly seen a rise in magical sources, leaks flowing in from Aetheria that The Weave seeks out. Small spaces that these Magicians have used to slip into the Mortal Realm, stretching them larger or creating new ones. Like poking holes in a lid to let air in, but not enough to let everything else out. These leaks are where most Magicians in the Mortal Realm have built up their communities, living on these lines of The Weave to give themselves strength. The further from these leaks the weaker their magic and the harder it is to cast more powerful spells.

Often these communities can be exclusive or closed to outsiders, keeping tightly together to protect their families and their secrets. Even those that do try to integrate more with the society at large will usually homeschool their children, fear of being exposed as the younger Magicians have yet to find full control of harnessing The Weave that surrounds them.

Most Magicians fall into two classes of magic user, physical and sensory. Physical users can generally see the weave, they’re able to grasp it, pull it into place to cast their spells. Their magic is more obvious and can be slower, but it’s more controlled and more powerful. Sensory users are about feeling, they don’t see The Weave physically, not without aid, instead they feel it flowing around them and with their will are able to manipulate it into their desired effect. While this is more subtle and faster in casting, their magic is harder to control and won’t be as powerful as the same spell cast by a similarly skilled physical mage.

Even within these two types are those that must use verbal or non-verbal castings. Non-verbal casters are hard to come by, often unaware of their own skill for years into their training as everyone is trained to speak the words out loud. The more difficult a spell, of course, the harder it is to cast without the verbal component. Those that are able to cast without words are considered some of the most powerful and fearful of Magicians.

It is rare that one born of a Magician shows no magical talent, most of these will learn how to access magic by the time they reach maturity, though it’s never as easy for them as those gifted earlier. Those that never gain magical ability often leave the communities or at least pull away, unable to truly understand parts of the culture they’re steeped in. A rarity in these rarities are those born to be shields. Due to the nature of their magic it also seems dormant or non-existent as The Weave automatically protects the user. Shield Mages often have passive abilities that protect them from mental manipulation or physical damage, a few even have immunities to things like the Werewolf curse. Some can only use these abilities on themselves while others can project it onto others, though it may leave them vulnerable. Stronger Shield Mages can use this ability to alter the Weave around them, creating a barrier, even one that can possibly reflect the damage back on to the attacker.

In all of the spells cast, something is given in return. For most spells it’s bits of the Weave itself, sacrificed in creation, but in negligible amounts. More powerful or dangerous spells often require more of The Weave to be sacrificed along with other physical components. Death Magic being one of the hardest, along with other forms of Necromancy. Some Magicians have sacrificed the lives of others of their kind in the name of Death Magic. Once the life of a Magician is snuffed out all the magic that was stored in them spreads out through the Weave. Making that location a powerful spot for spells, even if temporarily. Some believe that because Magicians join the Weave in death that it would be possible to return one to life by drawing back the pieces of them in the Weave and returning it to the body, no one has yet achieved this.

Magicians appear to be normal mortals for the most part, though when they cast spells often the glow of the Weave inside of them shows through their skin. Some older Magicians may show evidence of spells cast, the faintest runes showing like scars on their fingers and hands. Others seem to have richer or brighter coloring. A rare few have longer pointed ears. They come in all colors as mortals, though in Aetheria with magic they were even more varied.

Magicians age similarly to humans, though the magic inside them keeps them healthier past most human lifespans by decades.

This is not a list of all the covens that walk the realms, just those that are relevant to our setting.

The coven views and ideologies listed below are the overall outlook for each group, the members within may share the views to varying degrees or not at all.

Many magicians even keep to themselves, not joining covens for whatever personal reasons there may be, though even then they will try to keep a positive relationship with these groups as the city can be dangerous alone and there is power in numbers for their kind.

If you would like to play a leader in one of the current covens please speak with an admin for details prior to submitting.

1. The Weavers
Hiding in plain site. The Weavers like to see themselves more as an ever growing family than any strictly ordered group. One of the oldest covens in the city and known to adopt stray Magicians, especially in their youth.

It is said the original matriarch of the Weavers fled from Aetheria amidst a rebellion that she helped start. Many of the people of Aetheria against the Gray Queen's rise to power.

While having since passed on, the Weavers still support the rebellion. Those that flee Aetheria, or are cast out, for their views on the power structure of their home realm are always welcome among their numbers.

What started as a small home is now a full estate, though in constant repair and new additions, it sits on a strong vein of the Weave allowing its residence easier access to magic.

They focus more on defensive magic, though those with greater skill and trust are shown more offensive spells.

The coven is much more reclusive and secretive as a whole. They try to stay out of the battles among other supernaturals and even mortals, their own focus on the survival of their people.

2. The Im'ilda
To outsiders the Im'ilda may seem wild or even a little frightening. They at times openly perform magic or alter their bodies however they please. Obvious stand outs no matter where they go. Those drawn to this coven are those who usually value freedom above all else, those with no desire to hide their true nature. For better or worse. Generally the wiser among them left to clean up various magical messes that could get them in danger.

The Im'ilda has an appeal to those that were brought up in a stricter lifestyle, or those who never understood the fear or even shame other Magicians had for their gifts. Even if they don't stay long, many may find their lifestyle rewarding in it's openness.

The leadership shares all goals and decisions with the rest of the coven, believing in keeping no secrets from their people.

Aside from their search for their own personal freedoms, they also have the best relationship with the other factions, even a few hunters who've determined they're less dangerous and more mischievous.
