Dave Norson 6:31am, May 24, 2010 [Edit] [Delete] | Lochmaben Center is a new school following the Xavier tradition for teaching young mutants to use their powers responsibly.
Founded in Philadelphia, the building face resembles a worn down, last century asylum for the insane. The inside, much like other schools built from Xavier's teachings, shows there is something quite different than what the surface may suggest.
The school is founded by loyal X-men and students of Xavier who dissented with the current direction of teaching for Xavier's School for the Gifted. While the two schools have diverged the Lochmaben school still considers itself part of the X-men family and wishes to keep good relations with other followers of Xavier's dream of harmony between mutants and humans.
Teaching is focused on students understanding that they are living weapons and learning responsibility and self discipline. Students are put into physical training and self defense and promoted to more advanced classes as their abilities and skills increase. Class structure diverges from the American model of education used in other Xavier schools and instead resembles the more progressive British system with small classes oriented towards mutual discussion.
The Lochmaben school, located in the middle of a major city instead of upper class suburbs, is uniquely located for dealing with local underground mutant groups that call themselves Morloks. The building itself has built access to several underground tunnels that link into Philidelphia's man made caverns of abandoned basements, closed off flood drains, bomb shelters, and access shafts. This will allow for a closer interaction between mutants living to the Xavier ideal and unaffiliated mutants that have not had such opportunities. One of Lochmaben's goals is to bring education and protection to the less fortunate mutants in the area and to help make such underground communities self sufficient, strong, and able to work with legitimate above ground organizations including the government.
