Human Realms and Societies

Name: The Empire
Tolerated Races: Human, Halfling, Ogre, Elf, Dwarf
Government: Representative Empire

The largest and most powerful of all the Realms of Men, the Empire of Sigmar is a large stretch of land in the center of the Old World contained between the Grey Mountains and the eastern World’s Edge Mountains. Considered to be one of the most Advanced human cultures in the world they are one of the few nations that produces and uses black powder weaponry. The Patron God of the Empire is it’s founder, Sigmar Heldenhammer, who forged the old tribes into a cohesive government with the assistance of the Dwarves in order to drive back the armies of the Orcs and Goblins. Currently the Empire is without its Emperor and a bitter civil war has washed over the land as various nobles vie for the right to be called the Emperor. Given the size and wide dispersal of various different groups within the Empire it celebrates a strong diversity within its ranks with merchants, nobles, farms and knights all rubbing elbows in the crowded Imperial cities.

Though there is no current Emperor on the throne, traditionally the counties within the Empire are each represented by an Electoral Count, a single leader who oversees the running of their jurisdiction. When the Emperor dies a new Emperor is elected from amongst the Elector Counts, their previous position being taking up by a selected successor. Each county within the Empire is itself has a standing militia which can be called upon by the Emperor during times of war. However beyond policies that effect the whole of the Empire or during a war time situation the real power of the Empire lies in the courts and with the Elector Counts themselves.

Though many Gods of Men are celebrated within the Empire, the official State Religion is the worship of Sigmar, a move that has angered the Church of Ulric, father of Sigmar. In the Northern counties the worship of Ulric over Sigmar is not uncommon resulting in a religious schism which has been a major reason behind the failure of the Elector Counts to find a new Emperor. However not every Imperial is as conservative a Worshipper of Sigmar or Ulric, rather keeping themselves open to the entire Pantheon of Gods. Still, under the frightful gaze of a Priest of Sigmar or the grim passing of a Knight of the White Wolf, the average citizen might sing the praises of the two volatile factions.

Mutants and other "unsavory" races such as Greenskins and Beastmen are killed on sight.

Name: Bretonnia
Tolerated Races: Human, Halfling, Elf, Dwarf
Government: Feudalistic Monarchy

The ideals of chivalry and heavily armored knights riding to a fair maiden’s rescue is not a dead philosophy in the World. In Bretonnia it is still very much alive. Still based on a Feudalistic system, the Kingdom of Bretonnia is lead by a King who holds court with the nobles of the surrounding territories which are themselves broken up into smaller stretches of land which are looked over by Knights of the Realm. The line between nobility and peasant is most apparent in this part of the world as Nobility have all the rights while peasants live a relatively poor existence. Crossing between stations is a large offense to the court, one which can result in the removal of ones noble rank if it is deemed worthy. Most noble lords are Knights who, according to their traditions, refuse to use ranged weaponry preferring the use of Lance and Sword, charging bravely into combat. Due to the stagnant and repressive nature of their society, they lack many of the technological advancements of the Empire.

The King of Bretonnia is selected by the standing Lady of the Grail, a powerful enchantress whom has the capacity to give rise to mighty champions or immediately spell the downfall of the ruling court. To this end all Nobles are devout worshippers of the Grail and "fae" people that inhabit the woods. Nobility is taught from a young age that their blood makes them better then the average peasant and the power of this elitist religion has managed to keep the Feudalistic Monarchy in power even as the world around them progresses. Noble males almost always become Knights, casting aside the use of ballistic weapons for honorable weapons such as Lances and Swords, engaging enemies in melee as their ancestors did.

The average peasant of Bretonnia, as a result of its stagnant government, are ill educated and beaten down. Many have toiled so long under their feudal lords that they do not know any better while others flee to the Empire or other nations in hopes of finding a better life. To this end many peasants do not worship the Lady of the Grail, who does little to help them, preferring the more traditional Pantheon of Gods practiced by the rest of the Old World. Occasionally a peasant will try and worm his way into the high Nobility but the crime for such attempts is usually a swift and messy death.

Like in the Empire, Orcs, Beastmen and Mutants are usually killed on sight.
