So far these are the options I´ve heard or thought of as to make money off this thing:

  • 3rd-party banners
Banners from sites such as DoubleClick or TradeDoubler. You´ve seen them around. They are 468x60 in size, and generally easy to dodge.
Would be placed in various sizez in the reader and userlist/avatar.
    No, I won´t go for pop-up/pop-under ads. I don´t like them.

  • Chat Master banners
Same as above, except that it would be chats who advertised in other chats...which is already done on the portal...but it´s an idea.

  • Subscription: No banners
In direct connection with the two above, this would then get rid of the banners for a chat.

  • Subscription: Extra features
This I like more. Freezing the features of free chats (as in, no they won´t get worse), and then making goodies for those who pay. I have plenty of stuff to do, and quite a few ideas for fancy features.

  • Donations
It would be good for me, and bad for others. A few nice people would donate, and a whole lot more would not, thus making the nice people feel they are carrying the load. Not favorable in my eyes.

  • Selling the chat script
Already a version of the chat is online and free to download and distribute, but maybe the next version could be for cash.

Another idea in the same spectrum would be to sell ´support´ of the chat, like the Linux community does it. Download for free, pay for help.

  • Any combination of the above

Comments, ideas, etc...?

Personally, I´m not much of a fan of ads in any capacity on a site. So Idea 1 isn´t one I´d positively comment on. That also eliminates Idea 3 for me, but the rest I do like. You might find that the donation system could work better than you think. More of a suggestion is to not make public exactly who donates and who does not, and to advise no one to disclose whether or not they do donate, as to alleviate your fear over the matter of some feeling they´re carrying the weight. Additionally, selling the chat script would be a wonderful idea that many interested coders would buy into, I´m sure. I know that some people have been asking you about coding RPG systems. Their complexity would allow you to charge quite a fee if you ever got enough time in your schedule to design one. Among additional topics of interest to people might be a considerably more expanded community. You could create something more than just a listing of chats on the portal. I love the main site, but it needs a ton more. Are you going to expand into writing games with C++ or Java? Or you could design mods and the like for existing games. With a server with this space and with your broad knowledge of programming, there are much more money-making opportunities than just expanding on chat rooms and selling newer versions of the chat.

Just do them all. Maybe you can make up some of the money you have been spending in the past for this. That way you have a lot of options. If it turns out one or two of them aren´t working, then you still have a lot already in place to fall back on.

If you´re going to do banner ads, I´d recomend NOT doing click-ads. People don´t click on them. Sell impressions/views, but not clicks. Check out pvponline.com to see some ads that cater to the gaming/rp community.

Selling ads to chat masters/rp sites is also a good idea. They don´t just have to be pjj people. There´s a pretty large online RP community that you should be able to tap.

There´s nothing wrong with ads, as long as they aren´t huge, obnoxious, whatever. A lot of people have a knee-jerk bias against them, usually because of huge annoying flashing ´you´re a winner!´ ads and pop up ads. Not all ads are that... horrible... however.

I also like the subscription/extra features service, but how much of a market is there for it? I´m *very* happy with what I have, and unless you had some unbelievably cool new things, I wouldn´t pay for them. (You provide a wonderful service, but if I had to pay for it, I´d complain a lot and find an alternative because I am very cheap.)

The subscription/no ads feature is currenlty being used by keenspot.com. I do not know how well it works, but there´s somebody doing it, so you could probably find out if it´s viable or not. It´s a good idea.

Selling the code is also a cool idea, especially if you are able to incorporate random die rolls and such.

Finally, donations can work to alleviate the monetary stress. It probably won´t solve the problem, but it can help out when times are tight. Either set up a "tips jar" or something for annonymous donations, or else publish who donates because people like to have their good deeds recognized.
Does it matter where you put em?

If it doesn´t matter where you put the adds, just toss them in the dark and murky corners of the chat system! Put one in the logs. They´re only checked once and awhile. Putting a few in the manual would be great too. Only the newbs would have to worry about it. Any way to put them in people´s profiles at the bottom? How about in the control panel and it´s many many pages? If you can´t.....well, just forget about this.

when ppl send donations, they get something extra... not that they know about it ahead of time, but the word would get around quick, and ppl feel good about it then. nothing is required, ect... but for those that do chose to donate, they get something in return, as long as they dont no about it ahead of time it should work great

ill try to translate this in a few days, got a rush of ideas running thru my head
