I've produced a small video file (1.8 megs, or thereabouts). That demonstrates that lightsaber effects are possible to produce with Adobe Premiere and Photoshop. Hopefully it will be avalable for download soon (thanks to Jezral for hosting it). It's not intended to be "smooth", or even remotely as good as anything ILM ever did. It's just a test project that I've thrown together, no refinement. Currently, It's half the length it will be in the end. The process that I devised to do this is free domain, and I'll gladly explain to to anyone who is curious as to how to do it. My work is origional, to the best of my knowlege. I didn't go searching for guides as to how to do this, I got bored, and something clicked in my brain. *shrugs* In any case, I think it's pretty cool. Comments and suggestions are welcome (encouraged, in fact).

That should give you the file. It's encoded with Microsofts Mpeg4 Codec. (Not Divx)

NOTE-this is not finished! I'll have the rest of it up this weekend, hopefully.

nice...

actually those are the exact programs that ILM uses to achieve the same effect, except they use after effects to refine it a bit...

a person who used to work at ilm (and produced some of the textures and effects that were used in episode 1) has since started his own company called dvgarage (http://dvgarage.com) which offers tutorials and tools to help achieve the same effects...

i have the composite toolkit where he teaches how to do the lightsaber effect, in addition to a couple other things. think i may actually check it out now.

you can actually see the tutorial where they add the lightsaber effect in after effects.

After reading The Dude's post, I decided to search for other tutorials on the subject. Turns out, there are a few out there that already explain the procedure pretty well (My way differs in a few steps from the ones I've seen). I'm going to check out the aforementioned composite toolkit, see if I can't refine my procedure a bit.

Here's a quick one I did myself using Paint shop pro/Animation shop and the Xenofex plugin. It's only a 230kb avi, but it's in Divx v5 format.
