Elly 9:41pm, March 26, 2015 [Edit] [Delete] | In the time before civilization was cultivated, a primal existence was all that thrived upon planet Earth. This primal existence however, found itself home to a number of different creatures, one of which eventually became mankind. 25-30 thousand years before modern day humanity was but cave dwelling people, finding that they were far more intelligent than the creatures living among them. Thus the natural order to hunt was driven into their instincts. Fashioning tools and weapons for the job, they went about their lives foraging, hunting, and living. However, with the distinct lack of sufficient predatory balance to keep human kind in check with the other species....Natural Selection decided to create one for them....forces of nature combining with that of ritualistic mysticism by human shamans in attempts to see the future or call forth their gods, would eventually prove to be the culmination of the most unspeakable horror ever to plague the planet.
During one particular ritual, a shaman of a particular tribe in the north noted an event in history which would not go unnoticed but not headed either. The event in question, relating to the shaman's work in the mystical arts, brought forth a creature derived from the blackness within his own heart. The first true major threat to humanity since their discovery of tools and weapons. The shaman, not truly understanding what he had wrought, attempted communication with the creature thinking it to be one of his ancestral gods. He was proven wrong when the creature latched itself to him, draining him of his emotional state of mind and leaving him a slothful withered husk doomed to die from lack of will to exist or sustain himself. This first creature began the cycle, creating others like it by feeding on the emotions of other tribal members.
This cycle would continue on through the ages, the creatures never really bringing humanity on the verge of extinction, but never letting up in their own growth either. Eventually in Early 4th and 5th Centuries, humanity, as well as the other evolutions of man, elves, dwarves, giants, etc, banded together to try and stem the tide of these creatures. For they had developed a knack for forming dreaded gatherings known as Shrouds in which they consumed all in their path like a vast wave of life stealing locusts. The man who lead this valiant effort, King Arthur aided by the round table and the first Grand Magician, Merlin(Female in this version). With the aide of the cultures and people from all over Europe and Asia, Arthur managed to cripple the Shroud's forces, their leader, Doll, falling to his blade as she vowed to one day gorge herself upon his descendants. But many did not believe Doll to be defeated. For she had gone by another name in those times. Morrigan, the vile witch who'd sought the throne of Avalon in the past, and still does to this day.
Several Shrouds have happened over the course of these past thousands of years. But the most devastating was perhaps during a time in which no one could explain what was happening. And this time, Doll would have no one to stand in her way. This resulted in nearly a third of the world's population vanishing due to what some considered....a plague. The Black Plague, was indeed real. But what caused it's arrival wasn't just rats or insects. Doll had conjured the plague as a means of snuffing out any attempts to form an efficient army to stop her from feasting upon the minds of the poor human fools who were ignorant of what was really going on, thinking their death toll due only to a simple disease they had no cure for. Doll ravaged the land, her minions growing fat and healthy....and eventually she grew herself, becoming the first Seed Mother and producing a new Doll, her daughter(Genderbent Mordred basically).
As the times passed, history forgot what happened and moved on. But now, as the time for their reawakening approaches, there are even fewer people aware of what lies in wait beyond the void, in the dark. The Shades are coming, and they are mighty hungry.
