After an exhaustive search for a plane carrying Vincent Solanus and business associate Katie Silva, authorities have confirmed his family's worst fears: The occupants of the plane are now presumed dead.
Divers are preparing for this Monday to search the waters off Cape Cod for a sunken plane, and the Coast Guard has shifted its focus from rescue of any survivors to recovery of wreckage.
At a press conference Wednesday night, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Benjamin Bell said that given the time that has elapsed since the plane disappeared from radar Friday night, search officials have concluded it is unlikely that Solanus, Silva, the pilot or navigator survived the crash.
Bell said he spent painful moments with the Solanus and Silva families late Wednesday, telling them that hope had run out, and that the focus was being shifted away from rescue. "It was very difficult to share this information with them," he said.
"We offer our condolences to the families and loved ones," Bell said.
According to officials, recovering the wreckage could take up to two weeks.
Fire at Raven's Crest, Wife of Rockstar Presumed Dead

Around six pm a fire broke out at Raven's Crest, the estate owned by rockstar Stephen Clay. The fire consumed the structure that housed the guest housing and the private recording studio of Clay's. Eyewitness accounts say that Ms. Livvie Locke, Clay's wife, was seen going into the structure but never seen coming out.

A body was found in the remains of the rubble and was far too burned to identify. It was in the area of the recording studio where experts say much of the equipment in there could have caused that part of the building to be the hottest and therefore causing the body to be unidentifiable. However to all accounts it is believed to be the body of Clay's wife. The fire caused an estimated one million in damages.

Clay moved to St. Solanus several months ago, purchasing the old gothic estate. Sources close to the couple said that they picked St. Solanus for the peace and quiet if offered them away from the turmoil of bigger cities.

When contacted the spokesperson for the rockstar said there is no comment from Clay at the present time and it will be let known when services for the presumed dead Ms. Locke will be held. Memorial contributions maybe be made to one of the Clay's favorite charities, Make a Wish, the foundation that grants children that have terminal illness their wishes.

We just learned that in the later part of this week Dr. Eric Solanus, world famed cardiologist, was arrested on the charge with the murder of Lenni Talbert, Jessica Solanus' sister. Apparently family had asked the police to keep this low key.

When approached, Camilla Solanus refused to make comment about her eldest son. A family spokesman later contacted us and told us that Dr. Solanus had been cleared of all charges due to confidential testimony from a surprise witness as to his whereabouts on the day in question.

Dr. Eric Solanus, 42, was arrested again on alleged charges of murder when he was found in his office with Jennifer Sampson, dead. Causes have yet to be released as to the cause of the young woman's death. A source at the hospital told this reporter that Jennifer Sampson claimed to be pregnant with Dr. Solanus' baby. The two had been spotted a couple times in public with each other.

Jennifer Sampson was 18, a nursing student at Bevel University, and volunteer at the hospital. Sources say that Miss Sampson was cheerful and very happy the last few weeks and there seemed to be no sign of trouble in her life. One friend of her's said she had been talking of planning a future with Dr. Solanus and their child.

As we know, Dr. Solanus is a prominate surgeon and cardiologist that grew up in our community. Oldest son of the founding family, and only surviving child. Earlier Dr. Solanus had been picked up for questioning for the murder of Lenni Talbert, the late Vincent Solanus' sister-in-law. Dr. Solanus was released when evidence failed to place him at the scene of the most violent crime to have hit St. Solanus.

Funeral arrangements for Miss Sampson pending release of the body and further investigation.

Solanus Weds: The REAL Dish!

September 25, 2004

The Solanus Sun Society Page has confirmed that DR. ERIC SOLANUS and his plastic surgeon fiancee DR. JUSTINE BROOKS tied the knot Saturday afternoon in a surprise ceremony in Lake Tahoe. The blushing bride wore a white, strapless CAROLINE HERRERA dress and Dr. Solanus donned a black ARMANI tuxedo as the two exchanged vows during a non-denominational ceremony at MOUNTAIN LAKE CHAPEL. A dozen to twenty guests, including Dr. Brooks’ mother and sister as well as Dr. Solanus’ daughter, Meg, were on-hand for the event, which took place around three pm. All attendants were shuttled to the chapel on the lake from a hotel about 15 miles away. Afterwards, at a reception held in the chapel reception hall, everyone dined on a feast of surf and turf specialities while local band, THE SUBWAY, provided the music.

A laughing Justine and her brand-new husband, Eric, departed the chapel in a black limo around ten pm to return to their hotel room. The rest of the guests emerged sometime later wearing everything from designer gowns to power suits. One young man going by the single name of DANEEL was dressed in a BETSY JOHNSON full length A-line skirt in black and a button up silk shirt. When asked about his outfit, he merely replied “Of course its a skirt. Do I look busty enough for a halter?”

New bride Justine also donned a lacey white GUCCI dress for the reception as she danced with her new hubby, and even performed, garnering groans from the guests, the “Chicken Dance”.

There will be exlcusive video footage of the wedding on Monday’s six and eleven o’clock news on KGAN, News Channel 9.

Marrying Solanus makes Justine more than a new wife, she's also now step-mom to Solanus’ twenty year old daughter, Meg with his first wife, LILY SOLANUS. She was, to no one’s surprise, absent from the ceremony. Meg (dressed in a stunning lilac TOM FORD creation as well as having a yummy date for an accessory!), when asked, seems happy about her new stepmom. “If she makes my daddy happy then that is all that matters.” And well Dr. Solanus did look more than happy as the twosome danced to covers of oldies.

This is the second marriage for Solanus and a sixth for Brooks. She met Eric while they were both working at St. Solanus hospital, but the pair's romantic relationship began in August after they were seen having drinks with each other around town. An injury, though, brought the couple closer together.

During an altercation, Eric’s nose was broken. Solanus went to Brooks to have her reset and repair the damage. It was during this time that the pair reportedly grew even closer.

Their relationship blossomed into something more after a few days spent on Dr. Solanus’ sprawling estate. After riding together for most of the day and then meeting up for dinner, Dr. Solanus proposed to Dr. Brooks that evening with a stunning two carat platiunum and gold engagement ring.

And now that the talented twosome has made it official, are their children in their future? The blushing bride seems to think so. “Well you just never know when the stork might drop by and bless you with a child.”

Mary Lawson: ‘Covered in Blue’
By Noah Silverburg

Covered in Blue
Mary Lawson
Midnight Sun Classical

With her decidedly non-Broadway first outing for Sun, singer Lawson strikes the perfect balance with jazz trio, big band and orchestral settings in a wonderfully voiced collection of standards and some new classics. That voice is warm, nuanced and confident, delivering humor, attitude and romantic pathos in just the right amounts. Her narration between tracks gives listeners the feeling that they are sitting in a smoky nightclub instead of listening to a studio offering. It seems that the move from the harsh New York terrain to the warmer Californian environment of St. Solanus has been a much-needed improvement for Lawson, who radiates warmth through her voice for all lucky listeners to this offering. Long gone are the garish belting out of abused numbers like ‘Over the Rainbow.’ This new album is as inviting as a warm embrace. It will cause those who have never heard of Lawson to fall head over heels in love with her and will make fans remember why they fell in love with her in the first place.

The instrumentalists are rarely the same from one track to the next, ranging from professional to almost amateurish, but it all works oddly enough. The transitions from pieces like “Cry Baby” to “Summertime” are flawless when Lawson’s voice is complimented by a professional orchestra. Where she really shines however, are the tracks that she did with the help of the St. Solanus High School Jazz Band. “Son of a Preacher Man” floats on a heady beat, while “Anything Goes” swings appropriately. Lawson shines on “Don’t Explain”, backed only by Romero Lubambo's classical guitar. Also worth noting is “Let’s Make Love”, a duet with Sinatra clone Michael Buble. The twosome sing the duet so smoothly, they have no trouble convincing the listener that they really are lovers. And don't forget the hidden track, a real jewel on the otherwise flawless album, “God Bless the Child” sung a cappella.

There is rumor that Lawson intends to release this first sampling as a double album later this summer. No word yet on a tour.

St. Solanus Say “No” to Wal-Mart

ST SOLANUS—“We are wining,” said state assemblyman Clark Gibson to a crowd of mostly public and private trade unions representatives this Tuesday.

Gibson’s message was clear: Wal-Mart is not welcome in St. Solanus or any other neighboring areas.

Gibson led a coalition of unions, immigrant workers, activists, and civic leaders between May 2005 and July 2005 against a Wal-Mart plan to occupy a site outside of St. Solanus. The coalition managed to create enough opposition, causing the site owner to drop Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart, the United States’ largest retailer and employer, operates more then 3,500 stores nationwide with a sales growth surpassing that of Microsoft.

According to Gibson, “Consumers want low prices but those low prices come with a huge price tag.”

One of the rally participants, a group called Jobs with Justice, took a national online poll in December in which Wal-Mart was voted “Grinch of the Year.”

According to Jobs with Justice, Wal-Mart has created such stringent requirements for qualifying for its healthcare benefits, that many Wal-Mart employees are left dependent on publicly financed medical services, a largely hidden taxpayer subsidy.

According to a study done in California, Wal-Mart workers seek $86 million a year in state aid because of inadequate wages and benefits. In effect, Wal-Mart cleverly shifts a portion of its labor costs to the public.

Wal-Mart’s Director of East region Corporate Affairs Ms. Mia Masten said in a statement, “Our jobs pay competitively at a national average of $9.68 an hour ($10.38 an hour in metro markets)—nearly double the federal minimum wage—and offers a wide range of benefits, including health benefits, profit sharing/401(k) savings plans, a discounted stock plan, life and dental insurance, discounts on merchandise, cars and tuition, and help with mortgages.”

However, a February 2004 report, conducted by members of the U.S. House of Representatives found that Wal-Mart associate salaries range from $7.50 to 8.50 an hour.

Other subsidies were brought to light in a study conducted in May 2004 by another group at the rally called Good Jobs First. The study subtitled “How Wal-Mart uses tax payers’ money to finance its growth,” found 244 cases in which Wal-Mart retail stores received a total of over $1 billion of taxpayers’ money in state or local economic development subsidies. The study listed ten different subsidies that included free or reduced priced land, infrastructure assistance, property tax breaks, sales tax rebates and even grants of public money.

“It’s like buying them a gun and saying ‘Shoot us,’” said Pat Purcell of the United Food and Commercial Workers union. Purcell says that Wal-Mart encourages their employees to apply for government subsidies to provide health insurance for their families, pays wages that perpetuate poverty, discriminates against women and makes their profits by outsourcing American jobs.

The true legacy of Wal-Mart is “Lower living standards for hardworking Americans and overseas workers,” said Gibson.

Ashton Hartwell of District 27 said that what makes Wal-Mart able to give consumers such low prices has to do with an agreement Wal-Mart has with the Chinese Government where instead of employing workers off the street, they just go right into prisons for the cheapest labor.

“It’s a company you have to watch and take action against,” said Hartwell.

City council approves downtown Starbucks

The St. Solanus City Council unanimously voted during a rare special session last week to approve an appeal by Starbucks to open a branch in the small town.

The council said a Starbucks location in St. Solanus would bring in more foot traffic and business to the dwindling downtown area.

``We've got to make some changes to town,'' said council member William Taylor. ``The year round residents are not supporting downtown.''

The 3 1/2-hour meeting drew about 120 residents of the area and about 55 filled out request slips to address the council. The vocal crowd was evenly split on the issue, with half arguing for downtown growth and the other half looking to maintain the small-town feel of the city.

Opponents of the plan said a downtown branch would create traffic and parking problems and drive independent coffeehouses out of business.

Augie Nasser, 31, a 15-year resident of St. Solanus said. ``Support local businesses, not a national branch.''

Many speakers during the public forum contended that they drank Starbucks on a regular basis but did not want the coffee giant to move into the neighborhood.

``All I'm asking is that we preserve the nature of the city,'' said Roy Truck, an eight-year St. Solanus resident.

In their opening presentation, Starbucks managers countered the company's image as a big-name corporate business.

``We would like to get it straight to you that Starbucks is a good neighbor,'' said Starbucks development manager Amy Floer.

In siding with Starbucks, council members, some of whom referred to the current downtown as a ``ghost town,'' said they were confident that Starbucks would attract new visitors to the city without greatly increasing traffic and parking problems.

Mary Lawson is Covered in Blue and Red Hot!
J.P James

One of this summers hottest tours has been none other than jazz diva Mary Lawson. She's been tearing up the country in smaller intimate venues from coast to coast with her adventurous new sounds.

The tour kicked off in New York with a sold out crowd at the legendary CBGB's. Rumor has it that several of the Gotti's along with hip hop mega couple Kimora Lee and Russell Simmons, and a host of other superstars packed the club for her debut show. In addition to her usual band, she's included for this tour a small horn section and special surprise guests.

From New York to Miami to Seattle Mary Lawson has shown her astounding range and scope as an artist. Wowing crowds with bawdy humor and steamy renditions of some of her favorite songs. Her encore in Portland of the Billie Holiday classic 'God Bless The Child' brought down the house.

With two dates to go there's rumor that her closing show in St. Solanus will be filmed for a dvd release to go along with her new CD due out in October.

Tonight catch her in Los Angeles at the House Of Blues. Word on the street says she's bringing out a parade of special guest stars. So far she's been coy as to whom she might be sharing the stage with but sources close to her say that she's been on the phone constantly with old beau Brian Setzer and gal pal Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde.

The fabulous Ms. Lawson was quoted recently as saying, 'this is the most exhausting and wonderful tour I've ever done. I've been blessed with great fans and beautiful venues. But I can't wait to get home.'

Sources say part of her new longing for home has to do with a man she's been seen canoodling with on the town in St. Solanus. Is the wild woman of jazz finally settling down? Is this new love interest part of her new flamboyance? Only time will tell.

SEASONS CASINO OWNER INJURED IN SUICIDE ATTEMPT

Seasons Hotel and Resort Casino owner, Zachery Slater, was found floating face down in his casino’s above ground pool late Halloween, the victim of a suicide attempt, police said. Fortunately for Slater, he survived with just minor injuries.

Slater, who has made millions from his casinos, was reportedly very unhappy in his personal life. Associates claim that Slater had been drinking heavily since the disappearance of his wife, Charmaine Brooks. Other sources claim that Brooks was having an affair behind Slater’s back and that his marriage was dissolving anyway.

The Seasons, one of the largest casino chains in the country, has been suffering ever since a scandal in the small Pennsylvania town of Pine Valley following a licensing issue. While the matter was investigated and solved, the popularity of the chain dwindled as the big casinos of Las Vegas became more and more family orientated. In an effort to diversify, Slater had brought in resort and spa treatments, using the St. Solanus site as a barometer for his other casinos. By all accounts, the casino was doing quite well there.

Sources have said that while the casino was doing well, Slater’s personal life was a mess. Since his wife’s car accident six months earlier, Slater had been pouring himself so heavily into work, it left several employees speculating problems at home. His wife disappeared once and then a second time more recently, leaving several to think that she had run off with an unidentified lover.

Guests of the casino heard a loud crash late Halloween evening before seeing Slater fly through the air and land in the above ground pool, in the deep end. Witnesses rushed to pull Slater from the pool as well as call authorities. Police are treating this as just another case of a high powered business man who had too much and attempted suicide. Doctors at St. Solanus Hospital have listed his condition as fair with a few broken bones, scrapes, and a concussion. However, Slater will most likely be under intense psychiatric treatment, whether voluntary or court ordered, once he is released.

Police did not disclose if they had found a suicide note. Authorities have said that they found a prescription for the popular anti-depressant Welbutrin, written to Slater, in his office. Welbutrin is known, at times, to increase feelings of desperation and suicide in some people.

When found two were bound crucifixtion style to large headstones the third to a tree. Each had a cross carved in their right cheek.

Officer Carl Jones told this reporter that he had never seen anything as gruesome in all his 20 years in law enforcement. One body was reported as to have been what he called field dressed. Each also had had their hearts seemingly pulled from their chests.

The bodies have been sent to the Medical Examiner to determine the precise cause of death and for identification.

Ladybug Inc. to buy AmanArts
By Paula Hawkins

ST SOLANUS (AP NEWS) - Ladybug Inc. Corp. Tuesday finally struck a deal to buy AmanArts, ending its 8-month hostile takeover battle.

Ladybug Inc. said it is paying $10.3 billion in cash, or $26.50 a share, for the rival business software developer. That's up nearly 11 percent from AmanArts's Friday close of $23.95.

Shares of Ladybug Inc. surged 9 percent while AmanArts's stock shot up more than 10 percent in Monday afternoon trading on the heels of news of the potential signing.

Ladybug Inc.'s previous offer for AmanArts had been $24, or $9.2 billion, a price it had insisted was its last and best offer. Ladybug Inc. announced last month that 61 percent of AmanArts's shares had been tendered to it at that lower price. Ladybug Inc. said that it is extending its current tender offer until Dec. 28 to reflect the higher bid.

Ladybug Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mary Ellsworth said during a conference call with analysts Tuesday morning that AmanArts approached Ladybug Inc. Monday evening in order to negotiate a friendly deal and that as a result of some of the data AmanArts provided about its business, Ladybug Inc. was willing to raise the purchase price again.

The original offer in June 2005 had been for $16 a share, or $5.1 billion. Ladybug Inc. raised its offer several times and even lowered it once during the course of the hostile bid. The company's previous high was an offer of $26 a share.

But AmanArts's board had continued to resist the offer, and a drawn-out court battle or possible proxy fight loomed. But events Monday night, including an arson at the St. Solanus base of AmanArts operations and reports of mysterious deaths in and out of the company prompted a deal to be struck.

Ellsworth stressed during the call that Ladybug Inc. planned to overhaul all existing software made by AmanArts as well as products developed by Eddison, another software company that AmanArts acquired last year. Ladybug Inc. has struggled to compete with the likes of AmanArts in the field of entertainment based software. While AmanArts and other competitors have taken a more violent approach, Ladybug Inc. continues to make games that are kid and adult friendly. Recently, Ladybug Inc. teamed up with Lucas Arts in an attempt to develop several new Star Wars games, rated for all audiences.

To that end, it's worth noting as well that AmanArts executives, including CEO and company founder Elizabeth Gould did not join Ladybug Inc. during Tuesday's conference call. What's more, AmanArts put out a separate press release to announce the deal.

In that statement, the company said Ladybug Inc.'s new offer represented, "good value for AmanArts stockholders."

Jessica Solanus was loving mother, philantropist

By Vicki Ferrero
Solanus Sun

ST. SOLANUS, CA - Jessica Solanus was the first person who greeted clients at her ex-husband's offices of Solanus Enterprises for many years with a warm smile and cheery attitude. Working as the main receptionist and personal assistant for Vincent Solanus for over five years and then going on to head several charities, Mrs. Solanus was a well respected and loved member of the St. Solanus community. Sadly, Mrs. Solanus was murdered in a mugging gone wrong late Wednesday evening in Castillo Memorial Park. She was only 35.

"Vincent said she always was his best P.R. person," said an associate, Letty Bowers, “She always had a smile and this amazing hospitality. She would have done anything for anyone.”

“I still run into people who say, 'I remember Jessica from the office,' even though she hasn’t worked here in years," Bowers added.

Mrs. Solanus graduated from Mercerville Community College with a degree in secretarial science in 1990. She moved to St. Solanus where she immediately started working for Solanus Enterprises in the secretarial pool. Within a few short months, she was promoted to personal assistant to Mr. Vincent Solanus. She left the company in 1996 to marry Vincent Solanus.

In 1997, after a year of marriage, she joined several charitable organizations including the St. Solanus Historical Society, Patrons of the Arts in St. Solanus, and the St. Solanus Hospital Board. By 2000, she was the head of the Oasis Center for Women.

Born in Mercerville, New Jersey, Mrs. Solanus was raised by her mother and had several siblings: Lenni Talbert, Dana Talbert, and Espen Talbert. Her sister, Lenni, was also murdered two years ago. Mrs. Solanus was very active and well liked at her high school and in her community.

"She loved to entertain, have parties, go out with her friends," high school friend, Andrea Miller said.

Jonathan Montgomery, her live-in boyfriend and father of her daughter, Erica, said Jessica was the pillar of the family, but was also active socially, especially within children’s charities.

"She was the heart, soul and foundation of this family. She's always the glue that held everybody together," he said. “She was silly, cute and so damn smart.”

Other survivors include an adopted daughter, Mollie Sharpe.

Police are working on every possible lead to find Mrs. Solanus’ killer. Citizens are urged to call the St. Solanus Police Department with any tips they might have that would aid in finding this person.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Sunnyside Funeral Home in St. Solanus. Service will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Pineville Cemetery.

Colin Farrell Sex Tape Website Blocked

Colin Farrell is celebrating after a website allowing surfers to view his leaked 30-minute sex tape was shut down Tuesday. The Alexander star's publicist Dancia Smith said website dirtycolin.com had violated a court order blocking the release of the footage - which allegedly shows the movie hunk engaging in sex acts with two unidentified females. On the actor's behalf Smith says, "A website attempting to distribute an unauthorized tape of Colin Farrell was shut down today. Mr. Farrell will take legal action against anyone who tries to distribute this tape." Farrell argued its release would harm his career, and he had never intended it for public consumption. A Superior Court judge issued a temporary restraining order to prevent marketing of the tape.

St. Solanus Fashion Week is officially under way.

The event began Friday, with 30 shows over seven days at Castillo Park. Celebrity favorites such as Zaldy and Jeremy Scott and local talent are among those unveiling spring 2007 collections. With the city primed for its fashion fix, this first annual celebration of emerging design talent gives local up-and-comers their first taste of the catwalk.

But the real kickoff to the week was The Experience with Stephen Clay concert on Saturday. Still set up from the Halloween concert the week before, Bevel Audiotrium was quickly transformed over two days into a fashion Mecca anchored by a 50-foot runway and dotted with displays of accessories.

Five designers competed this year in the first ever St. Solanus’ Top Star, a competition aimed to showcase the best of models, designers, and musicians. Winners were given challenges every week for five weeks before fashion week. Their final challenge is a runway show and concert at the close of Fashion Week on November 10.

"Within St. Solanus there's so much culture and it's so radically diverse," Top Star creator Sarah Malone said. "There really isn't a uniformity among contestants. That's the brilliance of this city.”

Famous fashion fans on hand for this week’s event include fashion maven Catherine Maladrino, band Scissor Sisters and the Top Star judges: Toccara of America’s Next Top Model, Alison Kelly of Project Runway, and Stephen Clay of The Experience with Stephen Clay.
