- ON BARIA -

In its natural state, Baria presents as a euhedral crystalline solid of violet to purple hue, poor clarity, and a vitreous luster. Size and shape of individual crystals vary greatly but are generally seen distributed within a range of 40-50 grams. The chemical composition and atomic structure of Baria is currently unknown. Baria comes strictly from Barian World; how it is produced there is unknown.

The predominant side effect of Baria usage is magical dampening. Secondary side effects include euphoria, muscle relaxation, respiratory depression, and rarely, hallucinations.

Absorption topically is the most common route of administration; Baria also dissolves readily in most aqueous solutions and can be ingested this way. Absorption through mucous membranes or by ingestion does not change the rate at which onset of action occurs. Dosage strengths depend on individual factors such as weight and metabolism, but generally 10g is considered a typical dose, with a duration of action around 4-6 hours. Tolerance to the drug typically sets in after 3-4 months of consistent (3-4 times per week) usage of Baria.

Physical and psychological dependence develop quickly, usually within a week or two of consistent dosage. The lethal dose of Baria is currently unknown. Side effects of withdrawal typically begin within two weeks of the last dose taken, and include magical sensitivity, muscle weakness, anxiety, fatigue, depression, and vomiting.

It should be noted that Baria has varying degrees of effect on non-wizards. Among muggles and non-magical animals (excepting felines) the drug exhibits no side effects. Effects of the drug on other supernatural entities are varying. Of note, it is known to have significantly deleterious effects in draconians, some of which are irreversible (see A History of Drakonids).

- ON MAGICAL DAMPENING -

The predominant effect caused by Baria usage is its magical dampening effect. Users will experience diminished effects of magic on their person corresponding with peak and trough levels of Baria concentrations in the bloodstream. This effect is manifested within the self, and not as an aura around the user. This dampens the effectiveness of all forms of magic upon the user, including beneficial spells such as healing or purifying magic. It does not cause any significant change in magic cast by the user himself, excepting spells that target the self. Interestingly enough, the use of Baria does not detract from transfiguration of the user, however it does slow down the transfiguration process, significantly more so in non-animagi, and increases the chance of imperfect transfiguration. It has no effect on properties brought about by elixirs and potions, nor does it guard against physical trauma in any way. It will offer protection again magically enchanted items as well as a passive form of protection against scrying of the self.

The mechanism through which Baria produces this particular effect is currently unknown. It is also not known if a sufficiently large dose of Baria could potentially render the user immune to all magic, or if the required dosage to achieve this might exceed the potential lethal dosage.

With dependency, the effects of regular Baria usage can continue for a time even after dosages are stopped. A regular Baria user may experience the benefits of magical dampening for up to two weeks following his or her last dose, before the onslaught of withdrawal begins. With Baria withdrawal comes magical vulnerability. While suffering from withdrawal, the user will experience increased sensitivity to magical spells directed at the self for three to four weeks following the last dosage.

- ON LEGALITY -

Currently there is no standing legislation on Baria's use. Multiple efforts have been made to add it as a Schedule I drug via the Department of Intoxicating Substances without success. Common citations as to why the substance is uncontrolled as of yet include its low availability and its potential usefulness due to its magical dampening effect. Proponents of the legality of Baria argue that its narcotic effects are no more potent than the effects of an Elixir to Induce Euphoria, the recipe for which is entirely legal and its ingredients readily available to most potioneers.

- ON BARIANS -

Barians are a humanoid race native to Barian World. The appearance of each varies drastically from individual to individual, but many share some similar features: large (usually) nonfunctional wings, animalistic features, additional eyes, no visible mouth and/or nose, and a coloration favoring shades of blue, red, violet, or gray. This form is their "native" appearance, however when existing in our world they adopt a physical appearance identical to their appearance as a human at the age of their death. They are capable of maintaining their Barian forms in our world outside of Barian sphere fields, however the comparatively higher energy state Barians exist at means they can only appear in this form for a limited period of time before retreating back to Barian World.

In general, although Barians can consume food and drink, they get very little energy in doing so. While in Barian World, most Barians sustain themselves by absorbing high energy radiation. They do not grow in size over time, however they can use this radiation to heal damage to their bodies. Barians are biologically immortal, but can sustain fatal damage and die, or succumb to untreated wounds over time.

Barians are "born" only when a chaotically-aligned person dies (particularly as a result of a violent, sudden, and/or gruesome means) possessing a strong will to continue living. These circumstances do not guarantee resurrection of the deceased as a Barian; the exact method of selection for this process in particular is still unknown. The person typically awakens in Barian World in their new form; knowledge and manner of their death remains with them and can result in psychological trauma, however in most cases the new Barian sees the event as a rebirth and a "second chance".

As such, Barians have no way to meaningfully reproduce, and despite their lifespans are very few in number.

There are only a handful of confirmed Barians; there may be more in existence remaining disguised as humans.

Don Thousand (date of death unknown, presumed deceased)
Vector (date of death c. 300 BC, confirmed deceased)
Mutation 96 (date of death unknown, confirmed deceased)
Mr. Heartland (date of death 1943, alive)
Semimaru (date of death 2006, confirmed deceased)
Kaninja (date of death 2007, alive)
Billy Loomis (date of death 2017, alive)

- ON BARIAN WORLD -

Barian World is a high-energy dimension located in an alternate universe which overlaps with our own. Most solid matter found in Barian World (including organic matter) is crystalline in structure.

The landscape consists predominantly of tundras broken up by fields of crystalline spires and acidic oceans. Barian World's environment is tolerable to most lifeforms for short periods of time, however the higher gravity, atmospheric pressure, and acidic environment make extended survival there difficult for non-native organisms.

Very little animal life exists in Barian World. The only native species observed aside from Barians are arthropods of varying shapes and sizes, which survive mostly on cannibalization. Plant life is much more abundant, but is often times indistinguishable from the crystal structures of the ground. Plants are most commonly observed when they flower, producing lotus-like petals that can grow to be several dozen feet long.

Running an electric current through a sufficiently sized Baria crystal creates a Barian sphere field: a localized area of space that replicates the atmosphere and environment found in Barian World. The size of the sphere generated depends on both the size of the Baria sample as well as the current strength and voltage. It is entirely possible that the area generated inside a Barian sphere field is not simply a replication of Barian space, but is in fact an intersection and merging of this universe with that of the universe and/or dimension Barian World exists in. These fields are not stable, and will diminish without a significant source of electricity to stabilize them.

- ON ASTRAL WORLD -

A third, low-energy dimension in another alternate universe also intersects with our own, known as Astral World. Its existence is hypothetical at this point, however the appearance of Astrum suggests it exists as a polar opposite of Barian World. As Barians are born from chaos, it is suggested that Astralians are born from the deaths of lawfully-aligned individuals.

Astral World and Barian world are anathema to each other. Astral World and Astral sphere fields (generated by running electricity through Astrum) are harmful to Barians and significantly weaken them. Likewise, Barian World and Barian sphere fields are hypothesized to have the same effect on Astralians.
