So I'm scrolling down the portal list, and I realize something; there's about ten 'goth' chats on the portal. And every one of them, for some odd reason, has to boldly proclaim that they are 'goth' in the title. How goth is that? Really? "Come chat here! We're real goths, unlike the thirty or fourty chats using the word in their title that came before and/or after us!" No offense to anyone meant, of course. I just have a very hard time taking anyone who has to proclaim how 'goth' and/or 'punk' they are seriously. The counter-cultures of yesterday are today's pop, sadly. I mean, Jesus H. Christ, man. I'm seeing ten and eleven year olds dressing 'goth' and/or 'punk' now because they like the way it looks. But do they know what the 'movement' was originally all about? Punk and Goth were originally intended to urge people to deviate from the norm and express themselves in new ways. Now? 'Punk' and 'goth' are the norm, at least in fashion. How many of today's 'goth' or 'punk' kids had even been born during the Punk Rock Revolution? How many of them know anyone who was? 'Most' of them dress in 'outlandish'(outlandish being nothing more than what appears abnormal based upon one's perspective and/or upbringing) clothing and listen to...wait for it...not what would traditionally be called "Goth" music, by which I mean Death Rock/Darkwave/"Ethereal/Ambient", but, rather, Marilyn Manson. And forgive me if I misspelled that, but, not being a big fan, I'm allowed to make mistakes in his name. Har! Wait...where was I in this little diatribe? Oh, right. The State Of All Things Goth/Punk Today. Many seem to have this notion that this somehow makes them special, different, or 'alternative'. Let me ask you this, though. When everyone's doing something, how in the blazes is it "alternative"? Alternative to what? Alternative to conforming with the other conformists? Because that's what you are, kid. You're a conformist. You're just conforming to a different standard than some other conformists. In closing, Goth and Punk are dead. They'll never return to what they were as long as fashionably trendy brats like that Advil chick are mass-marketing them to the...er...masses. That's not neccessarily a bad thing, though. Because if you like being 'this', 'that', or 'the other', then be it. Just be sure it's because you actually like it, and not because you somehow think you're striking a blow against the establishment. You're not. No matter what 'it' is, The Establishment owns a pretty hefty chunk of it. How else do you explain the rampant runaway train that is Hot Topic? Not knocking Hot Topic there, because they've got some nifty stuff. Though they do also seem to push that "counter-culture in a box" mentality. But, hey, there's no escaping it in this day and age. And that wasn't much of a closing, was it? How about this, then? "If there is anything the nonconformist hates worse than a conformist, it's another nonconformist who does'nt conform to the prevailing standard of nonconformity." - Bill Vaughan Though I'm sure whoever happens to actually read this would rather it be this quote instead. "Tha-ba, tha-ba, tha-ba, that's all, folks!" - Porky Pig

As far as my understanding goes on this, there was a single major goth chat long, long ago that fractured. Hard. And then each of the splinters have themselves been fracturing regularly ever since.

But what do you expect? This is what goth kids do. They proclaim their angst, then they proclaim it is greater than your angst, then they fight, then they scorn each other by forming their own individual cliques.

Mind you, this has nothing to do with the punk counterculture. This is the vampiristic angsty emo bad poetry goth of today's kids. It's not even a musical thing nowadays.

I have no problem with it. I indulge in a lot of my own little cultural ephemera that someone out there will surely say I like just because it's the cool thing or because it's not the cool thing.

That's what the current crop of goth kids do. I refer to them more as Spookie Kids. Ooooo, spooky! I went through a semi-goth phase a few years ago. That kinda/sorta faded out because (a)I lived out in the boonies. No clubs or concerts, which is where the fun is, and because (b)I realized it was all just trend now. I still like the clothes and music, but I don't consider myself 'goth'. It's too much effort to actually bother putting on more than a t-shirt and jeans, and I can't stand a large percentage of the people who proclaim their gothness to the world. Then again, I can't stand a large percentage of people in general. Eh. Whadda I know? I'm really just talking to hear myself talk at the moment. Being pompous every now and then is fun! ^_^

*blink blink* nice rant. Seriously, ranting well is a dead art these days.

But slipping into a teenage mindset for a moment (hey it wasnt THAT long ago thank you! =P I still remember how it goes!) I just wanted to say that my insecurities are better than your insecurities. So there!

May all your hangups be drip dry.

Non-conformity is just another form of conformity. The next generation always rebels against the previous and chooses not to 'conform' and create their own 'counter-culture'. But the truth is that they still conform to the culture. Deep, no?
