Badlands aims to be a unique roleplaying experience. In order to do that we have chosen the American Old West as our backdrop. This is a time of cowboys, indians, lawmen, and lawbreakers. In order to feel more like a functioning frontier town a new system of trade and commerce had to be designed. The details of which will be outlined below.

Calamity
---------
Calamity is a cowtown in South Dakota, it sprung up because of the railroad and as such has easy access to the railway. Calamity is still growing, and as such not all facilities may be here yet. In order for a venue to exist, the venue must be purchased by a player character. NPC's cannot own a venue. Example venues are the general store, sheriff office, brothel, saloon, blacksmith. However once a PC owns a venue the location will automatically be staffed by an NPC, who will conduct day to day business when the PC is away. This will provide a sense of an ever growing town.

Calamity will also follow the rules of old west town construction. When a Player applies to a venue, they will be allowed to place it on the town map, the best slots falling on main street. First come first serve is the way of things in Calamity.

Residences are not terribly close to the town proper. This is to keep the hustle and bustle of Calamity away from the private home lives of residences. However it is a short walk into town. (Maybe 5 blocks in a modern city)

Economy
--------
An optional feature of badlands will be to take part in the economy. If you choose to take part in it your character will be given a $100 bonus on registration. This will cover your travel expenses plus initial costs to set up a residence. Your character may or may not already have personal wealth prior to coming to Calamity. That will be decided when your background application is submitted.

Upon creation you will also detail your family size (npc's are allowed) This will help establish your "weekly debts" and weekly income (npcs can work local jobs to bolster your earnings)

The average cost to feed a family of four per week comes to about $18.50, yet most jobs will pay out a weekly wage of $2 to $16.

This system is optional and not required of players. However, participation might earn you rewards that are unavailable on the general market.

Quest and Duty Cards
--------------------
In order to supplement your income, from time to time announcements will be posted on this board. They will range from general services ,such as assisting a cattle drive, to helping capture a wanted outlaw. You will then accept the job (replying with -accept-, first come first serve) and type up a cameo of your little adventure. You will then post the cameo as a reply to the job (and you can post in the chat too if you like). Doing this will earn you a reward, which is... as always .. tax free income.

Duty Cards pay less but will be relatively uneventful affairs such as routine cattle drives and helping townfolk. They are resolved by a cameo RP here on the boards.

Quest Cards pay more than duty cards but have an element of danger to them. These will be things similar to cattle drives through indian or bandit territory, or going after criminals. Some quest cards may be part of a live RP action in chat. Most are just ones you will respond to here on the boards.

Venues
-------

As previously mentioned, venues are what makes Calamity thrive. The examples given are only a small portion of the available options to players. You may also own things like ranches. When you own a ranch it will become a playable venue.

In order to own a venue the player must describe a few details. This obviously begins with the player information (unless they already exist, which means that app has been submitted) Once this is done, they will submit it to the town hall (will be a thread here on the board) so others can see it. The details needed are: (a blacksmith shop is used as an example)

Character name: John Doe
Age: --
Appearance:
Background:

Venue Name: John Doe's Blacksmith Shop (Can be as basic as Blacksmith)
Venue type: blacksmith
Venue location: Calamity - Main Street
Brief description: 2 - 3 sentences

Once these details are handled, the player is asked to draw a layout of the venue. It can be done by hand or on paper.
(This is not mandatory but I would appreciate it since I'm drawing the town map. Besides, it can only help people get a feel for your venue. MSPaint is fine, or a doodle on a napkin you then took a photo of with your phone.)

After that its all yours! You will earn an income now from the venue even if you never go there.

Income
-------

Each venue will provide a weekly fixed income. This comes from npc townfolk buying and selling at your venue. Any income gained from PC's (such as buying a drink at the bar) must be logged by the venue holder and submitted to a Game Master. Who will add it to your profits. You don't need to do this, it can only add to your profits.

Those buying goods are tasked to record their purchases (if perishable goods and drink) and send them to a GM.

As for permanent purchases (clothes hats guns) just add an entry in your profile page under inventory, plus the item cost. If you don't, well maybe that six shooter you bought for protection suddenly does not exist when you need it.

This may seem like a lot of work but it really shouldn't be.

By the way I would like to say again that the economy is an OPTIONAL aspect for characters. You can own a venue and not take part in it, or even not own a venue and not take part in it. You could also be a wandering trapper and take part in it. Land doesn't mean you are forced into it.

It will add extra work, I know, and will make life more realistic (scarcity is a bitch). However I believe those who take part in it will enjoy it once we work out the growing pains.

If you opt out, then nothing will work differently than in any other chatroom. You can buy and trade with stores, pcs, and npcs. You won't have to worry about accruing a mountain of debt. Life will be smooth sailing (at least economically. any hardships there are your fault lol)

People have asked if having a venue forces them into the economy...so thats why I am clarifying this here.

You may opt in or opt out at any time. I for one will be involved in the economy. And my characters will likely be poor as dirt lol.
