The Force:
A'lar considers himself to be a warrior philosopher, spending his free time now contemplating the nature of the Force, but quick to use a lightsaber and well trained in its use. As a student, A'lar was taught the philosophy of the Potentium. Later, as a Jedi Knight, he included in his personal philosophy the ideas of the Greater and Lesser Force blending it with the traditional view of the two sides of the Force, Light and Dark. The Greater "Cosmic" Force was a neutral benefactor, offering its power to Force sensitives. The Lesser "Living" Force had the dichotomy of Light and Dark, and it was the individual that needed to seek balance within himself, before finding balance outside. This balance of Light and Dark was one that could be maintatined tenuously as long as anger and maliciousness did not guide the Jedi's actions, the Force could be manipulated in any way without risk of falling down to the corrupted path with the Sith. Although this is A'lar's personal philosophy, the reality is that this way of thinking and his fighting style draw him incredibly close to crossing over to the Dark Side.

Brief History:
A'lar Ossian was abandon as a child. He never knew his parents, and as long as he can remember, he never cared. He was immediately adopted by the Empire and put into their youth training program on a distant colony that remained in Remnant control even after the fall of the Coruscant in 7 ABY. One would protest to the Empire's military use of children, but nobody cared because they were all orphans, and seperated from the majority of society. A'lar was not even given a name, simply a military code to address him by. His sole satisfaction in life were his instructors' praises, which were showered upon him for his talents in the cockpit. He cared little for the Empire that was training him, so it was of less concern when the New Republic raided the colony he was stationed in ABY 16, the same time he was to graduate from the academy.
During Luke Skywalker's search for Force sensitives to build his new Jedi Order, A'lar was found then inducted as a 3rd generation student. It was actually the one of the Jedi masters that gave A'lar his name; Ossian was actually a tribute to Ossus, the planet on which is the Jedi's knowledge repository and first philosopical school.
In his days in the Imperial academy, A'lar was known for being a superb pilot, but that reputation paled when he finally took up a lightsaber. He took an immediate liking to the hand-to-hand combat and was quite proficient at it. Through hard work and training he was eventually able to use the difficult double-bladed lightsaber and actually become quite adept with it. His style of fighting and attitude blended perfectly with lightsaber combat Form VII: Vaapad. It combination with his double-bladed lightsaber, he is a whirlwind of destruction.
As a padawan, he went with his master in several combat missions against the Imperial Remnant, quite a few were space combat. For his valor, A'lar was awarded his own E-wing. Despite the urging of the Republic Navy to join their ranks, A'lar declined saying that his place was with the Jedi, which was true in part. It was also that he perfered lightsaber dueling and ground combat to the mechanized battles of starfighters. Although he did promise to lend his assistance should the need arise.
The Jedi Order did much to turn around A'lar's apathetic disposition from his days in the Imperial academy. While he did genuinely love the New Republic and swore to protect it and the ideals of the Jedi Order, he had one major flaw. A'lar enjoyed combat a bit too much for a Jedi. It was not that he was a bloodthirsty warrior, but he enjoyed the challenging fights, the ones that would push him past his old limits, which is what may have drawn him to the Vaapad style. His talent and personality mesh perfectly with the fast paced, in the moment fighting style of Form VII. His continued success (although a few times narrowly), gave him a certain air of arrogance and pride. While these were not necessarily damaging on their own, in combination with the Vaapad fighting style, they are a path that could one day invite the Dark Side.
Since the attack on the Jedi Temple on Yavin IV, A'lar has joined the other remaining Jedi at their new Temple on Ossus. Stinging from defeat suffered by the Jedi, although indirect in the survivors' case, he has new resolve against the Galactic Imperium.
The death of Grandmaster Luke Skywalker was a hard blow to A'lar. It announced the end of an era for him. As he tries to wrestle with that thought, he also attempts to fight off the urges of revenge for the fallen Jedi Master. Knowing that it was the Imperium that had something to do with Skywalker's sudden death, he is ready to go to Hell and back, and bring those Imperials with him.
After a training acciedent with a student, Jesch Mabet, which resulted in A'lar slicing off the boy's arm. After that incident, A'lar went off into the wilderness to meditate on what he had done, and what had guided his actions to do so. What was meant to be a few hour session became a month long exile spent entirely in a trance. During that time A'lar believed to be communing with the Force, learning its "true nature". As he understood the accident with Jesch was that all actions and outcomes stem from the will of the Force, and therefore, they all lead to some ultimate good. This has blurred the line further for A'lar, between the Light and Dark sides of the Force.
