History
A certain breed of demons was once used slavery due to their speed, strength, and ability to control shadows. Their long lifespans and strengths made them very useful to noble demons and other households. Oniko’s father was one such slave until he managed to escape and trick a woman into helping him hide. The clever demon gave her kind words and confessions of love which soon had the woman wrapped around his finger. The woman did everything to keep him safe and gave him all she had to offer. It wasn’t long before bounty hunters started sniffing around and to save himself the demon left the woman admitting he had no love for her. Abandoned and pregnant, the woman could not return to her family and had the baby alone in a small village.
When the baby was born she was given the name Oniko. Sense her mother was only human she was never taught her how to use her powers and was never brought into any other demon territories. She lived a fairly carefree life, until her powers started to surface and she didn’t know how to control them. Her mother attempted to shield her from the world and keep her from using her powers knowing that her father was once a slave because of the type of demon he was. The local villagers knew she was different and started to alienate the family. Childish mistakes would start rumors and accusations against the mother and daughter. Even the local children taunted her taunted her. Oniko in frustration accidentally used her powers practically killing the children. This burst of power caused terrible events to be set in motion. The villagers now convinced the family was dangerous tried to drive them out. When the mother refused to leave or give up her child the villagers became much more aggressive. In the middle of the struggle Oniko let loose her untamed power once more. In the midst of the chaos a group of demons entered the town, destroying another Oniko had not already including her mother. They claimed to be from a demon tribe held original ownership over her father and did not treat her too kindly. The reason Oniko’s father was sought after for so long even after his escape was because he was one of the few remaining breeds of demons left. Oniko was only a half demon but they decided she could be of some use despite her impure blood. The young girl was forced into the slave pens her father once escaped from and learned the villagers were not nearly as cruel as her masters could be. At first she followed most of her orders all the while learning and growing stronger which soon changed to open rebellion. They decided to exercise their authority on her by sealing away part of her soul and powers, literally splitting the soul in half. They believed this would help to better control her as a slave and for a time they were right.
As Oniko grew into adulthood her powers were becoming easier to control which might have been in part because some of it was sealed away by the demon tribe. She became a very troublesome slave and was resold a number of times because certain masters either were fed up either losing money over her, damages she would cause, or simply from her escaping and being recapture by another tribe. It was very obvious she could not be used for simple labor, the pleasure of her masters, or being trusted to come back from missions so her latest master sent her to fight for gold in the slave pits which only helped her to grow stronger even more. One night a mistake was made in the cell Oniko was kept in and she managed to escape, causing chaos as she went to cover her tracks.
Split Soul
Oniko didn’t know it at the time but the splitting of her soul caused a reaction her masters had not expected. These side effects would only manifest while in the care of her last master and even Oniko does not fully understand how it happened or if it can be fixed.
Because Oniko’s soul was split for so long, it grew to have its own consciousness yet could never be completely severed from Oniko. The voice of that side often torments her. If Oniko were to lose control of her demonic powers she transforms into a 12-year-old child, sense that soul only matured mentally but not physically. The other side of Oniko rules over her power and isn’t afraid to use it. She is also much more blunt and rude with even a less sense of compassion for the world. This is the tormented Oniko, the one that only remembers the abuse, hatred, and the need to kill.
