Piotr stands a very imposing six feet seven inches (unarmored) and weighs roughly 275lbs. He has short black hair, strong but kind features and clear blue eyes. In his armored form he grows another foot and his weight doubles. His skin is covered in organic steel, allowing him all the movement he could have while unarmored.

Upon first glance, most people would assume Piotr to be a gentle giant, and they would be absolutely correct. Despite his size and incredible strength, he does not have an overtly violent bone in his body. Because of his enhanced strength, he is very aware of how much force he uses and can be surprisingly gentle. He is kindhearted, honest, intelligent, and caring. He is also a very gifted painter, and often spends time painting landscapes to pass what little free time he has.

Piotr's mutation grants him the ability to transform his entire body into a form of "organic steel", with properties analogous to osmium but of still unknown composition. Colossus cannot transform a portion of his body into this armored state; he must transform completely. When he transforms, he gains around a foot in height and his weight is at least doubled.[citation needed] In his armored form, Colossus possesses superhuman levels of strength (300tons max), as well as superhuman stamina and durability. While in his armored form, Colossus requires no food, water, or even oxygen to sustain himself, and is extremely resistant to injury. He is capable of withstanding great impacts, large caliber bullets, falling from tremendous heights, electricity, and certain magical attacks.

Piotr "Peter" Rasputin was born on a Soviet collective farm called the Ust-Ordynski Collective near Lake Baikal in Siberia. He lived there with his mother Alexandra, father Nikolai, and sister, Illyana. His older brother, Mikhail, had been a Soviet cosmonaut and had apparently died in a rocket accident. So distraught was Piotr about Mikhail's death he ran off into the cold tundra. It was there when he was alone that he experienced the first activation of his mutation. He slammed his fists into the ground, causing the ground to raise up in a shockwave.

Soon after, his little sister, Illyana was born, and Piotr was very protective over her. Dubbing her "Little Snowflake", he often spent his afternoons painting her (at her insistent request) and showing her how to paint as well. A few years later, Piotr was helping ready for the harvest when his sister wandered off into a wheat field. The crop was so tall that the man driving the combine could not see her and headed straight for her. Calling out her name, Piotr dropped what he was doing and charged after her. He changed into his armored form and stopped the combine by letting it crash into him, thus destroying the machine. From there, his secret was out.

It wasn't long until his father had insisted he go to the Institute to learn to control and develop his new found power, and being the good son he was, he obeyed. He did well at the Institute, becoming a well rounded student, and even a star on the wrestling team. He remained in close contact with his family in Siberia, and visited them as often as he could. It was during one of these trips that he had found out his sister, Illyana had a type of brain cancer, one that at this current time is incurable.

It was then that Piotr decided his career path to become a neurosurgeon so that he could indeed one day help his darling little sister. He took on a heavier course load and began throwing himself into this field. Things were progressing well for him along this path and soon, he would be moved up to the University. There, he met Katherine Anne Pryde, and the two of them became close friends.

Recently, Piotr was tasked with keeping watch on Katherine, as she had been stalked by the demon Blackheart. During this assignment, they had grown closer from generic acquaintances, to close friends, to being in a whirlwind romance. The end result of this whirlwind courtship has landed Piotr and Katherine as husband and wife.
