HISTORY -

Magneto was born Max Eisenhardt in the late 1920s to German Jews. His father served honorably in World War I. His family escaped to Poland to hide from the Nazis as they rose to power, but were captured during Germany's invasion. His family (mother, father, sister) were executed before his eyes. Max lived, somehow, and was taken to Auschwitz, where he served as a Sonderkommando doing forced slave labor by disposing of the gassed Jewish victims. Here, he met a Roma gypsy he had known as a child, Magda. They escaped the death camp during a revolt in 1944. Calling himself "Magnus" now, the two had a daughter named Anya, who was killed in a burning building when a mob discovered Magnus was a mutant. Enraged, he used his powers in a horrifying display to murder the entire mob in seconds. Magda feared Magnus and ran, pregnant with twin children. In trouble for the crime he committed, Magnus had a forger give him a new identity, a gypsy named Erik Lensherr.

Erik met and befriended Charles Xavier while working together in Haifa, Israel. When HYDRA attacked, the two were forced to reveal their mutant powers to each other, and Erik appeared as Magneto for the first time. Following this, Magneto tried to convince Xavier of his more direct views concerning the co-existence of humans and mutants, but left disappointed with a cache of stolen Nazi gold.

Magneto gathered a group of mutants who believed in his cause and formed the Brotherhood of Mutants, and they would go on to incite multiple acts that the government, authorities and many people of the world will see as terrorist in nature. Magneto merely states his stance that mutants and humans can never co-exist peacefully, and demands equal rights. He does not wish for it to be this way, but the humans leave no choice when they allow such deplorable treatment of mutants so openly.

In his early days, he met with and battled Xavier's X-Men team, suffering numerous losses as they worked together to stop his plans, which normally involve human loss of life. He even creates an orbital base of operations called Asteroid M, but it is destroyed by the X-Men as well. After multiple defeats, Magneto traveled to the Antarctic Savage Lands to change the local Swamp Men into the Savage Land Mutates, utilizing genetic manipulation. With them, he fought many of Earth's superheroes.

Magneto later reformed the Brotherhood and created an artificial mutant named Alpha, who turned on Magneto and reduced him to an infant. Moira MacTaggert cared for him in this stage and attempted genetic tampering to keep him from being "evil", but it backfired when Magneto re-accessed his powers and was restored to adulthood, but at a younger age. He then created a new Brotherhood of Mutants and opposed Doctor Doom, when he tried to take over the world.

It was after this time that Magneto discovered his own Brotherhood mutants, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, were his children born of Magda after she left him. He revealed this to his children, and discovered his grandchild, Quicksilver's daughter Luna, and attempted to reach out to them as their father, but they rejected him, angry with his past decisions toward them.

Magneto then allied with Xavier and the X-Men to participate in the Secret Wars, fighting alongside the X-Men, who started to gain his trust as he assisted them. Once victorious, he was transported back to Asteroid M just before it was destroyed by a traveling alien being, Warlock. After recovering, he joined the X-Men again to battle the being behind the Secret Wars, the Beyonder. He stayed with them even after the conflict was over, and learned much from their ways and their beliefs on mutants and humans coexisting. Feeling guilty for all he's done, he surrendered himself to the law. He was about to be cleared of all charges when the tribunal was attacked, and Charles Xavier nearly killed. He requested Magneto take charge of the school until his return. Magneto agreed.

While Magneto truly tried to reform while in charge of Xavier's school and the New Mutants, outside forces led to actions that caused devastating consequences. He submitted himself to the courts yet again, but used mind-control technology to alter the minds of the judges, who let him off. Soon after, Mister Sinister's Marauders committed genocide of the Morlocks in New York's sewers, and he could not prevent students from running away from school, or the death of another student. Magneto left the school to take over the Hellfire Club in order to amass an army for what he believed was a coming war between humans and mutantkind.

Magneto created another orbital base called Avalon, where he felt mutants could come and exist peacefully, without the strife and awful conditions experienced on Earth's surface. A group of mutants called Acolytes rally to him, led by Fabian Cortez, who manipulates Magneto into constant conflict with humans, superheroes and the X-Men. A battle aboard Asteroid M causes its destruction. Fabian leads his Acolytes on to worship Magneto as their god.

Magneto returns and has his announced heir, Exodus, hunt Cortez down, seemingly killing him. But Cortez would return again to cause Magneto stress. The United Nations Security Council enacts a plan to keep Magneto from using his powers or returning to Earth, but he destroys the satellites causing the interruption. The X-Men fight Magneto aboard Avalon, during which Magneto forcibly extracts all the adamantium from Wolverine's body, and Xavier angrily mind-wipes his friend. The mutant Holocaust comes and destroys Avalon, but Colossus saves Magneto by launching an escape pod back to Earth.

A former Brotherhood mutant, Astra, clones Magneto and battles Magneto with that clone. Magneto wins and flees into hiding, while the clone, now called Joseph, goes to join the X-Men. The world believes he is the true Magneto. Magnus himself, though, took on the identity of Erik the Red and caused multiple problems for the X-Men and others, including killing the forger who created his Erik Lensherr identity.

Magneto returned to the public with a demand for a sovereign mutant nation which he may rule. The United Nations surprisingly granted him the isle of Genosha. Magneto now rules the island, after overthrowing the human natives who had been enslaving mutants. He raised a mutant army and, intending to declare war on humanity, kidnapped his friend Xavier. The X-Men responded and Wolverine savagely defeated Magneto.

While Magneto recovered, Xavier's sister Cassandra Nova sent an army of Sentinels to destroy the nation of Genosha. He seemingly perished in the destruction and, meanwhile, a mutant named Xorn took on his identity and performed heinous acts in his name. Xorn is killed, however, and Xavier discovers the true Magneto still alive on Genosha. The two agreed to disagree and worked together to rebuild the island nation.

Thus brings us to current day events, the mutant registration act, and the attacking Sentinels. Magneto is aware of his daughter, Wanda's children and their subsequent "deaths" at the hands of Master Pandemonium and Mephisto. However, he is not aware that she has somehow resurrected their souls into teenagers Billy Kaplan and Thomas Shepherd.

POWERS -

Magneto's powers are complex and range over a variety of abilities all centered around the control and manipulation of Earth's electromagnetic field. Not only can he feel and sense metals and electromagnetic fields, he can control them. Metals do not have to be ferrous or magnetic. He has no problem in controlling multiple metallic objects at one time, and can perform complex tasks with them, even different tasks among the controlled objects. The size of the object is usually not a problem, and Magneto has displayed, on multiple occasions, the ability to control massive objects with little strain, especially while under duress.

There are limitations, however, such as if Magneto needs to reach his power beyond Earth's own magnetic field, or control very large, heavy objects on the other side of the globe. His powers can also reach into subatomic levels, using the electromagnetic energy bonding molecules together to utilize ambient metal molecules in the air. Though affecting the electromagnetic force that dictates subatomic chemical bonding is very difficult for him, and he rarely does this.

Due to his genius-level intellect, he has no problem using metallic objects to assemble complex machinery on the fly. Magneto's powers do not always limit to just metallic objects, as he can affect non-metals to some limited extent...such as when he levitates himself, or others (though he usually does this by placing himself or others within a magnetic field that he can control).

These magnetic fields that Magneto can create are nearly indestructible, and selectively passable. Within one, he can withstand the detonation of several thermo-nuclear warheads. He also uses this field to survive in the airlessness and cold of space. He has the ability to manipulate the electromagnetic field to generate powerful emp blasts, as well as affect individual photons of light around him, which helps with the occasional invisibility.

He can affect gravitational fields around him, and alter the effects of gravity, as well as bend the electromagnetic and gravitational fields enough to open controlled wormholes to aid in teleportation to distant locations. He can also channel electromagnetic energy through his own body to greatly increase his physical strength and durability, as well as agility...to make him much faster than a human at his peak abilities.

In addition to his electromagnetic powers, Magneto is extremely resistant to all but the very strongest (say Professor Xavier's) or most unexpected telepathic intrusions and attacks. His electromagnetic powers do tend to interfere with a telepath's ability to break into his mind, and his helmet adds technology to boost this affect. Through meditation over the years, Magneto has learned to forcefully block his mind to telepaths as well, further compounding on his mental shielding.

Skill-wise, his knowledge of various fields of science is astounding: he has advanced skills in genetic manipulation, engineering and particle physics. He also has shown incredible dexterity and innovation in the creation of multiple forms of advanced weaponry, numerous space stations (namely Asteroid M), sentient superpowered humanoid beings, devices that can cause devastating seismic events, machinery that can block telepathic abilities, and even tech that can completely nullify a mutant's powers.

In addition to these skills, Magneto has a photographic memory, and can construct complex machinery and tech from memory. He knows and is fluent in several languages of Earth, and is a master cryptographist. He can also read the unnoticed microexpressions of someone's face to determine how they are feeling or what they are thinking, which he does often to enemies of his. Further, Magneto is a master strategist and combat tactician, having very extensive combat experience. He's been trained in military-grade CQC and other forms of hand-to-hand combat.
