When Emily was 5, her father stumbled upon a secret involving his partner, Fred... one that would have put Fred in Jail. While he was debating turning his partner, and closest friend in, Fred found out Adam knew and decided to take steps. He sent some assassins to Emily’s house one stormy night and they brutally murdered both her mother and her father right before her frightened eyes. They then turned to her and were about to come after her when her powers kicked in and she vanished into thin air. Greatly unnerved by this, the assassins ran out of the house, screaming about ghosts, and she was left in the deserted house with her parents' corpses.

After a day of mindless weeping, she was finally able to use the mind she had and she packed a few belongings and left her house before the cops were informed of the deaths, determined never to turn back. The assassins spread around the news of her powers to the lower side of town and some men, who collected mutant children so they could use their powers to their advantage, bought every last bit of info about Emily that they could... including what she looked like and what her powers were. The men then went on a search for Emily, plotting the most beneficial ways for them to use Emily's power. They found her as she was walking down an alley and, without a second thought, knocked her out, put her in their beat up station wagon and drove to their hide out. She was then put in a cell with two other mutant children (a boy named Andrew and a girl named Sarah) and they became good friends in their shared captivity.

During her time as a prisoner, the men who had taken her tried as best they could to get Em to demonstrate her powers for them. When she failed to do as they asked, they tried alternate means of "persuasion" such as beating her, taking away her food for a couple days, putting her into isolation, and, as a last resort, even tried beating her friends. Even after all of this and still no luck they finally figured out the truth... She could not control her powers at all. They had come across this before and whenever they did, they could usually teach the child at least rudimentary control, so they tried with Emily, but she simply refused to co-operate. Getting fed up, they packed up the possessions they caught her with and took her to a place they heard about from some people in a bar rumored to be a school for mutants; the X-Mansion. Leaving her there with her few possessions, they planned on watching her and retrieving her when she gained sufficient control over her rogue ability.

After some time at the mansion, she hesitantly became friends with Naomi, Remy, and Brent. They were patient with her, helping her both with her shyness and, unknowingly to them, her memories... giving her something to smile about and continue fighting for.

One winter day when Naomi and Emily were playing in the snow, Joe came and, posing as her father, tried to get Emily back from the Mansion. Naomi, noting Em’s fearful reaction to the man figured out the truth and wouldn’t hand her over, causing Joe to leave, vowing to get her back. From then on, Em suffered from nightmares about getting handed over to the man and put back in the cell that had been her home for that horrible period. Later, she told Brent about what what going on and he said he would protect her.

One day Brent and Emily were out, Brent sure he could protect them, when they were grabbed by Joe and his accomplice, Scott, and taken back to the base. Emily was put back with Sarah and Andrew and beaten repeatedly for her stubborn refusal to help them, while Brent was put in a seperate, secluded cell and forced to go through a lesser version of Emily's beatings. While captive, Emily met another boy named Alexander who was just a mutant in the wrong place at the wrong time.

After a couple weeks of this, Emily, desperate to get her friends out, used her powers and escaped her cell one day. Running to an office, she called the X-Mansion and gave Sam Guthrie all the info she could about where she, and the others, were being held. This action finally resulted in a rescue mission involving Vincent Murdok, Naomi, Dave Norson, and Renafel. During this mission, Joe and Aaron were killed and Scott was left behind, near death, and all the children were brought to the mansion. Brent and Emily, the two most injured, were taken to the med bay where their wounds were taken care of. Emily also suffered serious psychological trauma from this and Brent suffered a severe head injury that would take years to heal. They were both held in the med bay for healing until Scott, a teleporter as it turns out, captured Emily again. She was taken to a log cabin, tied to a chair, until a hasty rescue was made by Brent and Andrew who commissioned the help of fellow student, Karli Morrison.

Over the next several months after her return to the mansion, Jade Hino helped repair the damage done to Emily’s mind and she is finally slowly getting back to who she was before this all started... though she still keeps her history a secret, only giving vague replies when asked about it.
