Born on the barren wasteland of Arkania, Gavin Lurid was raised by a nanny
droid while his father spent long hours mining diamonds from the planet's crust.
His father, Xanin Lurid was a prosperous diamond miner on the planet, located in
the Colonies region. He provided for Gavin, while saving up credits for the
boy's future. Xanin was eventually able to purchase a small diamond mine close
to the family homestead, which turned out to be a successful gamble for the two
of them. Melon sized diamonds were extracted from the private mine, providing
father and son with credits to purchase extra mining and labor droids to assist
in the workload.
When Gavin was old enough, he worked in the mine and assisted his father to
gain experience in the mining industry. It was during this particular time that
Xanin had revealed to his son the history of the Lurid family. Gavin's
grandfather, Garn Lurid was a Jedi Knight during the Republic ten standard years
before the onslaught of the Clone Wars. Dispatched to the banking world of
Aargau by the Jedi Council, Garn investigated reports of the InterGalactic
Banking Clan secretly financing the production of battledroids. Upon landing on
the planet in search of evidence, Garn was ambushed in the spaceport by
mercenaries employed by the InterGalactic Banking Clan. Although Garn was a
prominent Jedi Knight and eliminated the mercenary threat, he was injured in
combat and later evacuated for medical attention. His left arm had been severed
at the elbow from a piece of shrapnel when a fuel cell exploded near him and he
sustained extensive burns to his legs. A prosthetic limb, consisting of
mechanical components would replace the arm he lost.
No longer able to continue with the investigation, Garn returned to his home
planet of Arkania to recover and ultimately faded into obscurity. His injuries
healed in time, enabling him to seek out a new life as a simple miner. Garn had
abandoned the Jedi Code and fallen in love with Cheyla, the daughter of a
diamond miner. The two of them were married and Cheyla gave birth to their only
child, Xanin Lurid. When Xanin was of a certain age, Garn had taught his son the
art of lightsaber combat along with other Jedi techniques.
Following the defeat of the Separatist movement and end of the Clone Wars,
Emperor Palpatine was declared ruler and a new era of tyranny in the galaxy
arose. Jedi that had survived the Clone Wars and protected the Republic were
being hunted to near extinction by agents of the Emperor. Garn and Cheyla moved
further into the wilderness of Arkania with their son, purchasing a homestead
that was less than accommodating. Instead of learning more about the Force and
becoming a Jedi, Xanin assisted in the construction of an addition to the family
homestead. He also searched for a job in the mining industry, wanting to avoid
galactic conflict and become a miner like his father. Xanin later met the woman
he would marry, while in a local mining supply and maintenance shop on the
planet. Romance blossomed and they were soon wed, but there was a shadow that
loomed in the distance, threatening to destroy everything Xanin had managed to
achieve.
After the rise of the Galactic Empire, Garn and Cheyla had passed away
respectively and left the family homestead to their son. Xanin managed to
remember the techniques he learned from his father and taught the same
techniques to Gavin, after the fall of the Empire by the Rebel Alliance.
Ultimately Xanin had given his father's lightsaber to Gavin, and he became
increasingly interested in following the path of the Jedi. Though there was something
that was troubling the young teenager. His mother had unexpectedly left the planet
shortly after his birth, leaving him with no memory of her.
It wasn't until Gavin was nineteen standard years old, that his father
divulged to him why his mother had left. Xanin was involved with another woman
before Gavin was born, which resulted in the birth of a child. Although Xanin
was terrified of losing his wife, he could not hide the truth from her. After
the birth of Gavin, his mother was confronted by a mysterious woman who claimed
that her child was the son of Xanin Lurid. Gavin's mother was distraught as
evidence had proven the mysterious woman's accusation to be true. She left Gavin
with his father, in search of a new life far away from Arkania. Gavin would
never see his mother again and the disturbing truth had a profound effect on
him.
The young man became rebellious towards his father and quit working in the
private mine. He purchased a SoroSuub personal luxury yacht 3000 that was in
serious need of repair, from a notorious scrap yard dealer in the Colonies
region. Gavin then began to outfit the hull of the craft with light armor
plating while tweaking the ship's shield generator and sublight engines, using
credits from his father's account. Also installed was a forward firing
concussion missile launcher located beneath the vessel's cockpit and a stern
mounted, rear firing proton torpedo launcher.
With the modifications to his starship completed, Gavin left the homestead
and Arkania behind, in search of adventure. He encountered a smuggling ring in
the Outer Rim, and was introduced to the leader of the operation. Gavin was
considered for the job and later hired as a pilot, to deliver illegal cargo
shipments to dangerous planets throughout the Outer Rim territory. During this
time he also accepted other minor jobs to earn extra credits. On a smuggling run
to the notorious planet of Myrkr, Gavin was confronted by Xanatos Marr. Xanatos
revealed that he was Gavin's nephew and challenged him to a duel, but was
quickly defeated without the use of the Force. Gavin then fled the planet and
decided to travel to Yavin 4, in an attempt to join the ranks of the Jedi at
Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy.
After training at the Jedi Academy for several years Gavin obtained the rank
of Jedi Knight, constructed his own lightsaber and decided to further test his
abilities by taking on an apprentice. Zysha Rayne, an outsider much like himself
became his first apprentice. At times Gavin harshly critiqued her methods of
using the Force, but he guided her to become a model Jedi in the New Jedi Order.
It was during this time that Gavin and his apprentice were dispatched to the
desert planet of Tatooine, to investigate mysterious sightings of Ssi-Ruuk in
the system. They left immediately in Gavin's starship, bound for the furthest
reaches of the galaxy, in the Outer Rim territory.
Their destination was the backwater world of Tatooine, where they immediately
encountered a fellow Jedi Knight by the name of Kjersti Renn. Gavin soon
developed a relationship with Kjersti, which didn't hinder the training of
Zysha. In fact, Zysha took advantage of learning from two accomplished Jedi
Knights. The two settled into Kjersti's desert home near the outskirts of Mos
Eisley and stayed there until their mission was completed.
Recent History
The accomplished Jedi Knight was reassigned by the Jedi Council upon returning to Yavin 4, traveling to the Outer Rim world of Vallera within Hutt controlled space. By this time, he was forced to leave his apprentice behind on the jungle moon, due to the danger involved with the undercover operation. Another Jedi Knight by the name of V’al Torlin accompanied him during his investigation of missing freighters throughout the crime infested region of space, specifically around the planet. Upon locating one of the missing cargo haulers, Gavin and V’al were intercepted by operatives from the terrorist organization known as the V-Initiative. They managed to fend off the majority of the Scourge Troopers employed by the group, but they were captured when an individual by the name of Thulek Var boarded the ship and rendered them unconscious using the stun setting on his blaster rifle.
Both of the Jedi were transferred into custody of the Imperial remnant… or so Gavin was led to believe. It was eventually uncovered by him that V’al Torlin had been in contact with Thulek Var and betrayed the Jedi Order in favor of working for the V-Initiative. Thulek revealed that he was also Gavin’s nephew, just as Xanatos had… and taunted him with the knowledge that his “family” would become devastated in the war to come. Gavin was placed in a secure Imperial prison facility on Bastion in order to face trial for “crimes” against the Empire.
During his captivity Gavin met another captive Jedi Knight by the name of Zayri Cresh. She had been transferred to a holding cell next to his, after being interrogated and tortured illegally for months by operatives of the remnant, including a particular ruthless droid known as 8V88. Gavin comforted her when it seemed as though she may succumb from her grievous injuries and ailments, but she managed to survive with his encouragement.
When Gavin was released from confinement, he went in search of the man directly responsible for his imprisonment. During his mission to locate the alleged leader of the V-Initiative, he encountered another individual on a storm shrouded world, far in the Outer Rim territories. The man referred to himself as Lucian Marr, Gavin’s remaining nephew—son of the half-brother he never met. The two of them duelled with lightsabers amidst the pouring rain, but it was unlike the fight with Xanatos years before. It was vicious and brutal, ending only when Gavin reluctantly stabbed his lightsaber through Lucian’s chest to prevent the twisted individual from killing him in turn, nearly piercing his heart and leaving him for death on the planet.
Instead of continuing his search for Thulek Var, Gavin took his ship, the Mynock Hunter into the Unknown Regions and went into self-imposed exile. He lived alone for more than two standard years, before he returned to known space and unexpectedly encountered a diminutive Aleena Jedi Master by the name of Thomar on one of the moons of Bogden. Gavin had originally sensed an unusual disturbance in the Force and traveled to known space in order to provide any assistance he could to the increasingly desperate Jedi Order.
In the wake of a new threat to the galaxy, the rise of the Ascension and its Sith Emperor, Gavin and Thomar ventured to Coruscant to begin reconnaissance of the former Jedi Temple. It had been years since he’d last seen Zayri Cresh, but during his investigation of a disturbing and alarming dark side aura, he reunited with her. Despite his unaggressive approach, she drew a blaster pistol on him at close range and fired a series of stun bolts into him. He was taken captive aboard a horrifying Sith starship and his connection to the Force was temporarily severed via the use of intravenous drugs. When he attempted to purge a sedative from his system, upon regaining his ability to use the Force, Zayri promptly broke through the mental barriers in place and was able to render him unconscious with an overwhelming surge of psychologically focused pain.
Having greatly underestimated Zayri’s abilities in the Force and her strength in the dark side, he was kept in an induced coma while the ship traveled to a massive wound in the Force—the graveyard of Malachor V. Upon reaching their destination, Zayri was ordered by her Master, Daegon the Tormentor to perform a highly disturbing ritual, sealing herself inside an ancient and power Sith sarcophagus with the unconscious Jedi. Unbeknownst to him, Daegon was the man he knew as Lucian. When he emerged from the sarcophagus, after experiencing infinite agony, he became a changed man. His mind was shattered while in his unconscious state, enabling Zayri to use her impressive skills in the Force to create a new reality for him.
Form III
The third great lightsaber discipline was first developed in response to the
advancement of blaster technology in the galaxy. As these weapons spread widely
into the hands of evildoers, Jedi had to develop unique means of defending
themselves. Form III thus arose from "laserblast" deflection training. Over the
centuries it has transcended this origin to become a highly refined expression
of nonagressive Jedi philosophy. Form III maximizes defensive protection style
characterized by tight, efficient movements that expose minimal target area
compared to the relatively open style of some other forms. Gavin Lurid took up a
dedication to Form III, and has become a formidable Form III practitioner. True
Form III masters are considered invincible.
