Brief History: Shinji has been recently unplugged. In her former life within the Matrix, she was a child prodigy in the fields of science and medicine. Graduating from high school at an early age, she raced through college attaining a degree in both experimental medicine and engineering. She made a small name for herself in the hacking community as well in her spare time, adopting the alias "Surge," a reference to both an electrical surge and the word "surgeon," reflecting her medical knowledge.

When she was plugged out and entered the real world, she had trouble leaving the Matrix emotionally. She went through a nasty readjustment period, but in the end, the last bit of nostalgia left in her was that she still answers to her "original" name of Shinji. On occasion, she even has difficulty answering to the name "Surge," as she's only really ever responded to it before in the form of text.
