Character Creation

Making a character uses freeform conventions, but a few traits are of particular interest in this setting. Character registration applications should contain the following info (* marking required info):

*History: Avi Sulo was born on Coruscant, and lived a hard-knock life that introduced him early to a life of crime. He eventually became the most badass smuggler, con-man, and thug this side of the core worlds, honing his sabacc skills in the depths of Coruscant’s undercity. He eventually left to sign onto a mercenary company in the Outer Rim, aiding the Remnant against the Ne’kressis. On his first assignment out of the abridged, mercenary version of boot camp, however, his ship was damaged by a Ne’kressis attack and he was forced to abandon ship, his escape pod landing on the Malevolent. There he has remained since the Cataclysm, throwing his lot in with the Black Voliks to seek profit or death. During one deadly attack, Avi was forced to duck into a ventilation shaft to avoid a band of mutant crew members. Trapped for over 17 hours, he eventually developed an aversion to tight spaces.

Most of these are pretty common to a freeform chat in this setting, but you will notice two new traits in the application, motivations and psychic flaws. These are simple ways of adding some flavor to your character and crystalizing his or her goals within the ship.

Motivations

Motivations are simple words that describe what your character’s overriding drive and focus are, or possibly a strong interest or hobby that has served the character’s survival on Malevolence well. One motivation is determined by your gang (if you have one), and two you choose on your own (thus gang-aligned characters will have three, and other characters will have two). Here are the gang motivations:

Psych Flaws

Psychological flaws are typically divided into minor and major, which determines (loosely) how much the flaw hinders your character. Keep in mind that these disorders are for fiction, not fact. Many of these disorders could be played as a major or minor hindrance, depending on how much it affects the character’s daily life and heroic actions. If you wish to play a flaw listed as minor as major, or vice versa, please consult a GM.

Each character must choose at least one minor flaw (though she may choose a major one instead). A minor flaw represents something that only hinders your character in one or a few specific situations, and your character may still be able to function in the situation despite the flaw (GM’s discretion). Claustrophobia, for example, the fear of enclosed or tight spaces, hinders your character in situations where characters are in extremely narrow passageways (such as access tubes and maintenance areas). Characters can still willingly enter these spaces, but may feel unease that hinders them in some way.

Major flaws significantly hinder a character in a broad range of situations, ranging from the most severe (Catatonia, a state of complete or near immobility, extreme compliance, being deaf/mute) to moderate (Amnesia, either related to short-term retrograde memory loss or long-term memory loss where a character remembers everything only after a specific point).

The following 13 categories roughly encompass the range of disorders that can be used as psych flaws:

Anxiety (Major/Minor), Dissociative(Major), Eating (Major), Impulse Control (Minor), Mood (Player Choice), Personality (Minor), Psychosexual (Minor), Psychospecies (Minor), Schizophrenia & Other Psychotic (Major), Sleep (Player Choice), Somatoform (Major), Substance Abuse (Minor), Other (Player Choice)

Choose a specific disorder within the category, such as a specific phobia/philia/mania. The following is only a basic list. For a description of specific disorders, see this post.

Categories marked with a * are also the flaw. So on the app, for example, you’d write Psychospecies (Wookiee) (minor).

Minor Psych Flaws
Anxiety (Minor): Choose a phobia/philia, like arachnophobia (fear of spiders) or vermiphilia (love of worms).
Impulse Control: Compulsive gambling, pathological lying, kleptomania, pyromania, impulsive/aggressive.
Personality: antisocial, avoidance, borderline, compulsive, dependent, histrionic, narcissistic, passive-aggressive, paranoid, schizoid
Psychosexual: impaired sexual desire/function, nymphomania/satyriasis, paraphilia, transsexualism
*Psychospecies: Character thinks she is a member of a specific alien species, or an alien creature or animal, but is not.
*Substance Abuse: Character abuses a specific substance, such as alcohol/one other specific drug.

Major Psych Flaws
Anxiety (Major): Generalized Anxiety Disorder (choose one or more: motor tension, autonomic hyperactivity, expectations of doom, vigilance, panic disorder, obsessions, compulsions), PTSD.
Dissociative: amnesia, fugue, multiple personality disorder.
Eating: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa
Schizophrenia/Other Psychotic: Schizophrenic (choose one or more: undifferentiated, disorganized, catatonic, or paranoid), running amok, boufee detirant, brain fog, ghost sickness, susto, taijin kyofusho, voodoo death, wacinko, Wendigo syndrome.
Somatoform: somatization, conversion disorder, hypochondriasis, body dysmorphic disorder.

Player Choice
Mood: Depression, mania, bipolar.
Sleep: insomnia, narcolepsy, night terrors, sleepwalking.
Other: Player may make up her own minor/major flaw.
