Gotham was once one of the America’s most magnificent port cities, a gate way for immigrants entering the country full of Hope and Opportunity. Located on the East Coast it was, for many years, the first sight many poor and downtrodden people saw when coming to America. Silver buildings and towering steel structures greeted new arrivals, a tempting taste of the wealth, of the excess, of the growing opportunities that Gotham represented.

However the years have grown hard on Gotham and opportunity turned to crime, hope turned to sorrow and the silver buildings and towering steel structures tarnished and rusted. Gotham is a city in remission, a dying metropolis whose faded glory is upheld as a point of blemished pride. While a cursory glance over Gotham doesn’t reveal anything more than a sprawling city it is rotten to the core. Corrupt political figures, dirty cops and rampant violence wriggle below the Cities surface like parasites feeding on the people of Gotham.

For the citizens of Gotham life is a continuous struggle to pretend that everything is alright. Most are too poor to leave the city and so pretend like their city does not have the issues it clearly does. They tell themselves that every city is this bad and that if they just keep their head down everything will be ok. The true cancer of Gotham is not it’s crime rates or it’s corruption, it is the apathy of it’s people who simply, in the vast majority, to turn a blind eye to the city around them. That sense of apathy allowed first for the rise of the Mafia Empires but these days those “honorable” criminals have been replaced with something far more dangerous. Murderous psychopaths, thrill killers and demented criminal masterminds have flocked to the city, many of which prey upon the people of Gotham simply for sport rather than for any financial or influence gain.

But not everybody chooses to do this. As easy and simple as it would be to join in with the apathetic crowds or to turn to crime as a means of survival or advancement, there are a few who take the higher road. The rare good cop, the idealistic politician and even ,in a city as bad as Gotham, the masked Vigilante.

In the last couple of years Gotham has become famous for two things, it’s violent crime rate and the rise of Masked Vigilantes, ordinary citizens who have lost faith in the system and taken up their own war on crime. No one else in the United States can one find such a diverse collection of so called Citizen Heroes, so much so that Gotham’s football team has recently be renamed The Gotham City Vigilantes. These people, for better or for worse, have been battling crime inspired by Gotham’s first masked crime fighter, the mysterious Batman.

Who will you be?
