Breaking news by the Route of the Ages:

Late last night, the U.S.S. Explorer, the first starship to make contact with any species in the new galaxy, was destroyed via a warp core breech. The breech caused a catastrophic explosion which propelled the ship down onto Tatooine soil, missing Mos Eisley by a last minute course correction, believed to be executed by the starship's one-time captain. The ship then crashed into the desert, where a joint Starfleet/GWAM force began evacuating the surviving crew to the nearby starfleet vessels that responded to the Explorer's distress call.

The official cause of the ships destruction is still under investigation, though it is known that it was NOT fired upon by any external force or starship.

It is not yet known whether or not the Explorer's famous Captain, Zon Huntreas, had survived the crash.

More information to come.

Our wishes go out to families of the federation members onboard that starship, and hope that everyone is ok. The Republic base at Tanos has been put on alert, and offers its medical facilities for those in criticl condition and who might not make a long trip to other facilities. The Farpointfleet has also been put on alert and Admiral Parks is ready to lend a hand at the Federations request.
 An update!

We've just heard word that Captain Zon Huntreas did indeed survive the crash- -in fact, he stayed onboard the dying ship in order to safely control the crash landing away from Mos Eisley.

GWAM helped secure the area for Starfleet salvage crews. The ship's hull was mostly intact, and any other wreckage were presumed beamed out.

It's also now known to us that there was definately some kind of struggle or attack on the Explorer's warp core from inside the starship. Captain Jonathan Womack was in command of the starship at the time.

At this time, the Federation has removed all wreckage and has pulled out of the Tatoo system.
