Chapter 1:
Theoretical dimensions:
The fictitious world a writer might create in one of his novels is a theoretical dimension. The dreams you experience while you sleep are theoretical dimensions. They exist in the realm of thought because we envision them, because we create them. Most people dismiss these as harmless, refusing to consider them as true dimensional space, however, with the proper spells they may be given meager amounts of substance. In very rare cases, with adequate belief, theoretical dimensions can become autonomous. See the curious case of "Sutter Cane". Travel through theoretical dimensions is often a matter of psionics, as opposed to sorcery. Also, see "The Emerald Dream".
Autonomous Dimensions:
These are real dimensions, populating actual continuum space. Travel between them is difficult to manage, but there are often "weak" points that a skilled planeswalker may be able to use advantageously. Such weak points may be recognized by bizarre physical phenomenon such as disappearances or gravitational anomalies (eggs rolling uphill, water flowing upstream, etc).
The Planes:
Planes are difficult to explain. It is best to envision the planes as a sequence of areas that populate the continuum space between dimensions. Each plane bears some form of relation to its nearest autonomous dimension. For example, the world of Toril is host to numerous elemental planes (Fire, air, water, etc), each of which are associated directly with Toril.
City of Doorways:
Even mentioning this place on paper is a violation of innumerable laws, but...I'm a bad girl. I recommend every planeswalker to pay it a visit. You likely will eventually, whether you choose to or not.
Nexus Space:
Whereas planes bear relevance to only one dimension, Nexus Space is a stretch of continuum that bears relevance to many. Nexus Space may surround multiple dimensions, interconnecting them like glue. I believe Tattooine to be located in the middle of such a Nexus. I've seen too many dimensional "travelers" to believe otherwise. Travel through Nexus Space is fairly reliable and incredibly fast, but unwary planeswalkers may find themselves lost if they aren't careful.
The Outer Dark:
I was once a cultist in service of the outer dark, but...those days are far behind me. The outer dark represents the encompassing blackness at the edge of every known universe. It is the vast emptiness that surrounds and contains us all. It is the embodiment of chaos, just as the multiverse is the embodiment of law. There are things that inhabit it, unknowable creatures that dwell near to us always. They live in the empty pockets between the dimensions, always trying to find a way through. They inhabit the endless ocean of time and continuum that surrounds the multiverse. Ia, Ia, Cthulhu f'th- Oh, damnit. There I go again, getting all carried away. |

Poke Zoidberg... in the outer dark space. That'll give you good luck while traveling.
