Mos Espa Herald 12:34am, November 07, 2008 [Edit] [Delete] | DATELINE - New Cairo, New Egypt, Arsinoic Empire
Rasheed al-Taliki Reporting
Mr. al-Taliki is a former citizen of the Arsinoic Empire, and considers himself a Child of the Nile. After a brief career in the military, Mr. al-Taliki filed for citizenship with the New Republic and gracefully bowed out of service to the Queen. He now makes his home in Mos Espa and has been reporting for the Herald for the last six months. This is his first feature.
For a very long time the Children of the Nile have been a symbol of power and authority in the Outer Rim, whether through the unpopular and expansionist-minded King Ptolemy, or the ever-changing populist leadership of Queen Arsinoe. But ever since the appointment of a man simply known as "The Prince" to the chief executive position of power, the Arsinoic Empire has taken a sudden shift.
At the conclusion of the Outer Rim Summit, Queen Arsinoe stepped down as Commander-In-Chief and Head of State, preferring a figurehead position as "The Queen Mother" to her son, a mysterious figure who has never made a public address or been recorded in any fashion. His leadership has been questionable, if existent at all, and some even doubt his existence.
And despite constant denials from the throne of a secret war with the Yeerks, who were guests of honor at the historic Outer Rim Summit, there have been increasing reports of interstellar combat between the two nations. The decrease in Children numbers outside of Children space has been drastic, with now only 10% of the Empire's population outside of the Queen's space at any given point, as opposed to last year's 35%, and the year before's 38%.
Trade coming in and out of the Empire has been at an all-time low since the founding in this galaxy, breaking the records of even the isolationist period during the Incestual War. It seems that all nations that make their capitol on Rak 4 are prone to long periods of little contact with the outside galaxy.
This reporter personally observed the wrecked hulk of an as-of-yet unidentified Children destroyer in close orbit around Black Planet. Intelligence reports imply that the entirety of Project Elephant, a fleet of top-secret warships commissioned by the Queen, may have been destroyed in combat operations with the Yeerks. Neither administration would comment on these allegations, but sources close to Visser 33 indicated that the Yeerks were using clones bought from the former Dread Conglomerate, and in turn selling weapons. What kind of clones, and what kind of weapons, have yet to be determined.
Economic reports from the stock markets of both Garrison and New Egypt indicate heavy negative growth in the double digits, implying that The Prince's alleged grudge against Visser 33 may be destroying both nations.
Meanwhile the on-going situation in the Pirate Nebula, dubbed the "Rim War" by Albay Gladius of the HHS Cairo, has taken a turn for the worse. A series of explosions yesterday rocked many nearby worlds. An investigation by the Mos Espa Herald and our sister periodical, the Kashyyyk Free Press, has uncovered compelling evidence that this is the result of a chain of antimatter weapons detonated in the area in an attempt by Arsinoic ships to force the Pirates out of hiding. Instead, the vast majority of the nebula was detonated, leaving millions dead and billions injured within the nebula as well as on nearby Hutt, Rodian, ORR, and Arsinoic installations.
The seeming implosion of the CoN and Yeerk economies is leading many to speculate that a power void that now exists may be filled either by someone within the power structure, or from an alien race.
More on this as it develops. |
